Hero and Beowulf
Beowulf was an epic hero. His story was passed down and remembered generation to generation. He fought to protect his people and what he beloved in. he was a wise man who had defeated a lot of evil monsters. Just like any great hero, rewards come with fame and fortune. Beowulf was epic because of all the great things he had accomplished.
Beowulf’s first heroic traits were his use of strtength and courage. With his courage he was able to stand up and protect his fellow people and with his strength it helped him defate his eniemies. For example, in the battle with Grendel,”And defate, the tears torn out of Grendel’s/ Taut throat, hell’s captive caught in the arms/ Of him who of all then men on earth/ Was the strongest” (346-349). In this quote Beowulf showed great strength in the battle with Grendel. He made his enemy run for his life. With Beowulf’s strength he had made the people feel safe again. Everyone thought he had amzing courage for coming face to face with the evil Grendel. In addition, “But so massive that no ordinary man could lift/ From its scabbard, broke the chain on its hilt” (488-490). In the quote, Beowulf showed his strength and lifted a sword that no regular man could lift. His strength allowed him to dominate in battle. If it were not for his pure strength or couage, he would not have been able to dafate Grendel or his mother.
Beowulf was in several nations. The settings were either in Denmark and the lake. For example, when Beowulf defated Grendel, “That mighty protector of men/ Meant to hold the moster till its life/ Leaped out knowing the fiend was no use/ To anyone in Denmark” (350-353). In this quote Beowulf had defated Grendel in Denmark. Its place is well known for Boewulf marking all the Denmark citizens feel safe. In addition, Beowulf had a battle with Grendel’s mother in the lake, “The water was calm and clean the whole/ Huge lake peaceful once the demon’s wod lived in it/ Were dead” (549-551). In this quote Beowulf was in a battle with Grendel’s mother and had defated her. He made the lake safe again and better. These two settings will always be remembered because of Beowulf. Doesn’t matter were he went, he always made a impact.
Another way Beowulf was a hero was through the gods and lesser divinities. They played an active role in the outcome of actions. For example, fate was on Beowulf’s side in the fight with Grendel “But fate, that night, intened/ Grendel to gnaw the boken bones/ Of his last human supper” (293-295). In this quote fate was on Beowulfs side. It was a major factor in the life of payan cultures. Fate also ties with the term “wyrd”. “Death was my errand and the fate/ They had earned” (237-238). Wyrd means the Goddess of fate. It was believed to be the controlling force of the world for pre-christian Anglo-Saxon culture. As long as Beowulf’s courage is good, it will help him through the battles. In addition, God was on Beowulf’s side in the battle with Grendel’s mother, “ God who sent him victory, gave judgement/ For truth and right, Ruler of the Heavens/ once Beowulf was back on his feet and fighting” (482-484). In the quote, God was on Beowulf’s side and helped him defate Grendel’s mother. God has the power to control everything resulting in predetermined fate. In the story, Beowulf knew God was on his side. The image of God is almost present all the time. God and fate isn’t just present all the time time, they are the reason why things are the way they are.
Beowulf was a great hero. He accomplished so many heroic things that everyone was greatful for. To his strength and courage, to all the signifante nations he has been, to fate and God being on his side. He was truly an epic hero.

The hero is an age-old concept that describes someone that will defend their honor to the end. In Beowulf, the author portrays the warrior Beowulf and his three battles in such a way as to clearly define what it means to be a hero. Fred Robinson and J. R. R. Tolkien addressed heroism in Beowulf regarding the warrior’s traits, as well as his battles and burial. The author of Beowulf defines the hero through Beowulf’s three battles with Grendel, Grendel’s mother, and the dragon. In this poem, each monster possesses a specific quality undesired by heroes. Beowulf battles anger/jealousy, vengeance, and greed/selfishness for the good of his Geat nation. As Beowulf fends off these anti-hero traits, he becomes capable of being a great leader of the Geats due to his divine piety – ultimately allowing him to be deified during his two burial ceremonies. Therefore, in Beowulf, the hero must utilize divine piety to overcome greed, vengeance, and jealousy in order to protect his nation.…
