really sacrificed his life to save others. Frederick Douglass, a former slave in Baltimore, Maryland, risked his life for a second chance at freedom. He took this second chance, and payed it forward to the other slaves of the union and take slavery to a screeching halt. In an autobiography by this man, he goes on to state that, “It was a severe cross, but I took it up reluctantly. The truth was that I, myself, was a slave, and the thought of talking to other white men weighed me down”(SB, 72). He tries to convey the point that sometimes being better than your problems can be hard, but rising to the challenge is the best thing that one can do to help you accomplish that goal. A hero will always make an effort to be selfless, to do the right thing, even if they don’t get the right reward, like cash or maybe even the praise from the person they just helped. The reason why is because the reward is on the inside. The warm and gooey feeling that one will get after helping someone. People that serve our country in the marines, navy or airforce never ask for a reward. A man by the name of Wayne Moore died at the lines of Vietnam, but one a silver star for his heroic actions of strategizing a move on some trenched gunners. One of his squad members said, “I had the honor of serving with some amazing men”(plymouth.wickedlocal.com). Even though Moore lost his life, he gained the honor of a lifetime. Another example that really hits hard is the man in the Red Bandana. This is a powerful example considering that he was a young man who was a firefighter. He was always carrying around a red bandana, no matter where he was.On that horrid day of September 11, 2001, 2 planes crashed into the twin towers, one each. Before the second plane hit, Welles was up on the first tower, ushering people out. Although he never made it out, he has become a legend, and will not be forgotten. Some think that to be a true hero, you need to wear spandex and wear your underwear on the outside.
In reality this is not usually the case. There is a video on Youtube that demonstrates it. There are some men on tugboats, and they are helping the people escape from the rubble and ash known as Manhattan. They willingly left their post to help others to survive the “Fallout” of this terrible destruction. A man named Vincent Ardolino said, “If I do it and I fail, I tried. If I do it and I succeed, better for me”(Boatlift). He was an ordinary man with his boat, and did something extraordinary with it. An example that is extremely surprising is that a cat named Tara saved this family’s child from a deadly attack from a neighbors pitbull. The father proceeded to say, “It was pretty amazing to see a cat take on a pitbull like that, I didn’t know that she had it in her.”(today.com) in a live interview as the boy who was attacked laid peacefully in his mother’s
arms. Sometimes, the most amazing heroes do not have to have powers, or a good personality, or even to really care about others to be a hero. All that is required is to sacrifice your safety and give that safety to another in need of it. Putting others before oneself is scary, but having the courage is the key to the door of possibilities. These people make others look at themselves in the mirror and say, “I want to be like that.” This makes the people of the world aspire to be something worthwhile and extraordinary.
