Herod The Great Chapter 2 Summary

During the time when Jesus Christ walked the Earth, the nation of Israel was under Roman rule and leadership was hand-picked by the Romans. Herod the Great was king during the birth of Jesus and is mentioned in Matthew chapter 2. In this chapter is where we are introduced to the Magi who follow a star that lead them to Christ. These Magi are more commonly known as the wise men that came from the east. The book of Matthew is clearly centered around Christ as King. Matthew clearly lays that out for us to see. Jesus Christ is king of the Jews and also to the Gentiles and these Magi were in fact, Gentiles. King Herod being the horrible and prideful ruler that he is, ordered for all the male children to be killed. He did not want anyone reigning on his parade. Herod was the one in charge and the one taking care of things. He would not allow someone to come and steal his thunder. He ordered this to happen and it did but Herod’s men were unsuccessful in killing Jesus.
Other than his murderous tendencies, Herod was known for his building projects. Herod restored the temple in Jerusalem, built many theaters, cities, palaces, and fortresses. His building programs included his palace at Jericho, the fortresses of Herodium, Machaerus, Sebaste, and Masada. He also financed structures throughout the Romans Empire. While Herod is known for his amazing building projects, he is also known for his tyranny rule over the nation of Israel. His anger and narcissism resulted in the murder of his own family including his wife because of “suspected treason”. He ruled in Israel like a tyrant. Herod truly believed that only he would be the king of the jews and no one else would ever take that spot from
