Heroes In The Odyssey
Homer’s The Odyssey describes the tale of a man who tries to find his way home after the end of a war. The hero Odysseus has a long journey home, of which he survives due to his cunning and persistence. In Ron Howard’s film Apollo 13, Jim Lovell and his crew, must find their way back to Earth safely after numerous technical problems arise. The captain Jim Lovell is a hero in the way that his success and communication skills with the team on earth saved him and his crew from a devastating end. Heroes are needed in cultures all across the world in any time period, because the people of that culture or time period need someone to look up to. Heroes provide a story with a role model, although they are not perfect. Heroes often reflect values …show more content…
An event where Odysseus is described to have used his cunning is his encounter with the Cyclops, Polyphemus. After Polyphemus traps Odysseus and his men in a cave, blocked by a big boulder, Odysseus tricks Polyphemus into becoming intoxicated. Odysseus then stabs Polyphemus in the eye, and tells Polyphemus that his name is Nobody, however sparing his life. Odysseus spares his life because he knew the screams of the cyclops would capture others’ attention and drive the other cyclops to remove the boulder. Rather than telling the cyclops his real name, Odysseus tells him that his name is Nobody so that the other cyclops won’t look for him. After other cyclops remove the boulder to check on Polyphemus, Odysseus and his men escape under the bellies of sheep. “My wits kept weaving, weaving cunning schemes-/life at stake, monstrous death staring us in the face-/till this plan struck my mind as best. That flock,” (IX 471-473). This passage shows how Odysseus came up with a plan to get him and his crew out of the cyclops’ cave, and came up with the idea while on his feet. Being able to think of plans on your feet is a skill not many people have. Not only did his plan use logic to escape under the bellies of the sheep to avoid being seen, but it also used cunning to trick Polyphemus into getting …show more content…

This reflects a valueof the 90’s, because the 90’s were a prosperous year. The Cold War had finally ended which made the Cold war and the Space Race, an event that could finally be documented as part of the past, due to our success in the Cold war. In book nine of the Odyssey, using his keen sense of knowledge Odysseus is able to outsmart Polyphemus, the Cyclops. In this section of the poem Odysseus character can be characterized as very intelligent, and also very clever because of the strategic plans he comes up with to solve the current problem he was in, and that was to escape from the cave of Cyclops successfully. Initially when Odysseus and his men arrived at the land of Cyclops Odysseus did not realize his current surroundings and him and his men began eating away. This really upsets the Cyclops so he then begins to eat away at Odysseus men, but throughout it all Odysseus still manages to come out on top and escape from the cave in book nine. This also made Odysseus a hero because it displayed his sense of bravery because his men that were with him would always wait for him to act on things, and if he would not have built up enough courage to stab the Cyclops in the eye so that they could escape the cave, then Odysseus and his men would have still been in the cave where they would have eventually died. Another thing that gave Odysseus the will to survive was his initial goal and that was to safely return home to his land of Ithaca, where he could be reunited with his family , his lovely wife queen Penelope and his son prince Telemachaus. Just the thought of being reunited with his son and his wife gave Odysseus the will to…

When Odysseus and his men venture into the cave of the Cyclops Polyphemus, they become trapped when Polyphemus comes back and finds them hiding in the shadows. Odysseus is then asked what his name is. Odysseus then replies by saying, “My name is Nobody. That is what I am called by my mother and father and by all my friends.”. pg 119. After blinding the Cyclops with a sharpened tree trunk, Odysseus puts the next part of his escape plan into action. While Polyphemus is sleeping, Odysseus manages to tie he and his men underneath the sheep so when Polyphemus lets the sheep out the next morning to graze, Polyphemus wont be able to tell that the men are escaping. Odysseus was clever after he tricked the cyclops, Polyphemus, to drink Odysseus’ wine. This caused the cyclops to become drunken and fall asleep. This allowed Odysseus to stab and blind Polyphemus. This was a both, clever and smart decision because if Odysseus killed Polyphemus, Odysseus and his men would be trapped by the massive boulder that Polyphemus put to block intruders from entering and exiting his cave. The Odyssey describes the sabotage as a bloody and gory event, “... straight-forward, lifted it, rammed it deep into his crater eye,’ ( Homer Pt. 1). The steps of the hero’s journey show similar insight, “ The hero's progress through a series of tests… obstacles that make them stronger,” ( Campbell 3). In the Odyssey the tests were an example of the fight with Polyphemus.…

As the great Arthur Ashe once put it “True heroism is remarkably sober, very undramatic. It is not the urge to surpass all others at whatever cost, but the urge to serve others at whatever cost.” The epic, Odyssey by Homer highlights the determination of a certain character to return to his homeland and family after many years at war. However, with determination comes important decisions to do what is right and what is best for all. In most cases, a hero must take some kind of guidance from his acquaintances. In addition, the extensive qualities of a hero can range from being loyal to others and putting their own life behind everyone else’s. By these standards, in the Odyssey, main character Odysseus can not be considered a hero because he…

Odysseus relies on his mind more than he does his strength. He is smart enough to know that he cannot overpower Polyphemus when trapped in his cave so Odysseus uses his stupidity against him. Odysseus outwitted him by calling out "Nobody is my name. My father and mother call me Nobody, as do all the others who are my companions" (), Polyphemus takes the bait thus allowing Odysseus to blind him. Odysseus also uses his craftiness by disguising himself and creating a plan to end up with the suitors locked in a room with him so he can kill them one by one. If Odysseus wasn’t clever he would not have been able to accomplish all that he has.…

Odysseus’s characteristics made him an excellent leader. After the Trojan War Odysseus led his men home but made a stop for food on a remote island. Odysseus’s curiosity of what the island held caused them to encounter a giant called Polyphemus. Polyphemus is also known as a Cyclops, and he was a cannibal. Odysseus' heroic trait is his mētis, or cunning intelligence. This intelligence is most often manifested by his use of disguise and deceptive speech. He has a special mastery of the spoken language that enraptures his audience and a gift that endows him to command and persuade them without physical force. The most evident flaw that Odysseus possesses is that of his excessive pride and his self-confidence, or hubris.…
