Heroes come in many different forms, types of people, and circumstances. There are three different types of heroes in the following poems and short story. “A Devil Went Down to Georgia” and “Still I Rise” each exemplify heroic qualities. One poem is a physical ability that enables the hero to come from his circumstance. The other hero is born into her circumstance by her race. Finally, the short story “Everyday Use” demonstrates the qualities of a hero by socioeconomic circumstance. Johnny gets a little cocky by saying, “Come on back if you ever want to try again.” Johnny is saying that he is unbeatable and to come back if you want to try to beat me again. All the strength and boldness and underdog qualities of Johnny are proven in “A Devil went down to Georgia.” Not all heroes come in the form of a physical action. Some heroes are born into a situation like Maya Angelou and racial inequality. The poem “Still I Rise” by Maya Angelou demonstrates her heroic qualities of strength, independence, and perseverance. In “Still I Rise”, Maya Angelou shows strength because in the 1950’s there were many problems for African Americans and women. This quote shows Maya’s strength “out of the huts of history and shame I rise up from the past that’s rooted in pain I rise.” (29-32) This quote shows strength through the use of an allusion dating back to the 1950’s. Maya’s ability to contravene the hard ship of slavery, oppression, slave trade, and women’s rights made her made her become a gregarious activist.
