Heroism In Andrew Niccol's
Andrew Niccol's ‘Gattaca' is a science fictional film about ambition, conquest and determination.
The movie is set in the future with a number of very different characters, Vincent is a very determined soul who was brought into this world in what's not considered ‘'the natural way''. His parents decided that he was to be a god child which means they would leave everything under his hands, unfortunately god did not bless Vincent with the best genetic makeup and he was destined for failure and a life expectancy of 30 years.
Anton is his younger but bigger, stronger brother that was genetically created by the local pharmacist, Anton was named after his father, for he was more perfectly made up and was worthy of his fathers name where as Vincent

Irene is a sincere woman who I believe is quite understanding, she falls for Vincent not because of ‘his' genetic profile but for his personality and human spirit.
Vincent also falls for Irene and learns a lot about the world after he has done so. But out of all of these different characters who is the real hero in the movie ‘Gattaca'?

Vincent holds a lot of heroic qualities, but what sort of heroic qualities does he have? Vincent's bravery was displayed in the scene where he an Irene are crossing the busy road.
Vincent's eyesight is not as well as it should be because of him removing his contact lenses, he struggles to see anything at all whilst crossing this busy road.
Determination for his final goal, which is to gain entrance into space, was what drove Vincent into stepping out onto the road and crossing, not leading any evidence to Irene that he couldn't see.
Another heroic quality of Vincent's is when he saves his brother Anton in the last two swimming games that they play, Vincent during the last swim was not close to his brother Anton at all, but this did not stop him from completing the heroic act of saving his

Jerome Morrow or Eugene is an under estimated hero of this film, his bad qualities like his drinking, smoking and snappy personality is made obvious, but his greater and heroic qualities remain uncovered.
Eugene gives the ultimate sacrifice of giving up his identity, in the beginning he is unhappy with his achievements (coming second), and gives up his identity for money and self pity.
But by the end of the story he has realised there is more to life and he is too late to realize this but as he says to Vincent "I just lent you my body, you lent me your dream", he is thankful to Vincent for this and makes the huge sacrifice of permanently giving his identity away to Vincent.
Another heroic and courageous act by Eugene is his own swimming scene where he climbs up the stairs in what seems takes an eternity.
Eugene does this in the act to protect his very close friends false identity and this is quite

Vincent's flaws are seen as a restriction on him from the moment he is born. The audience sees this through the nurse's proclamation that his "early fatal potential" is at "ninety seven percent probability." The stigma attached to such a condition is shown when his father refuses to give Vincent. his own name, demonstrating effectively how his inferiority results in him being abandoned from the outset of his life. These events are indicative of the stigma attached to the notion of being an ‘INVALID' in this "not too distant" future. However, what this synthetic and artificial world in Gattaca fails to account for is the strength of the human spirit, which relates to the concept of "nature" and the emotions that define people what make people human, even in the face of their perceived shortcomings. Vincent makes the assertion that "they've got you looking so hard for any flaw, after a while that's all you see." This is perhaps the most telling aspect of the ‘superior' society which reinforces the idea that the future has become little more than an emotionless, mechanical system, and that in the manufacturing of a ‘better world' has lost sight of what is truly important.…

From the day Vincent was born, he had always been concidered as highly flawed, and as an 'invalid'. His parents were planning on carrying on the family name with their first born child by calling Vincent, Anton, after his father, Antonio. However, once finding out that Vincent was prone to illness' such as neurological disorder, manic depression, attention deficit disorder, heart failure, and was expected to live for only 30.2 years, Vincent's father felt that he wasn't worthy of the family name, and decided to call him Vincent Anton instead. Mother and Father, Maria and Antonio had a second child, who Antonio felt was worthy of the family name, because unlike Vincent who was conceived the natural way, Anton was born through genetic engineering. As the two boys grew up, Anton was always considered superior to Vincent as he was always upstaging him at everything they did. Until one day, when the two boys played a game of chicken. Like usual, Anton was expecting Vincent to turn around and swim back to shore. However, no matter how much effort he put into trying to beat his brother, Anton and Vincent were neck and neck the whole swim. Anton was confused at how Vincent still had the energy to swim, and finally Anton wasn't able to go on any longer and he gave up. Passing out and starting to drown, Vincent saved his brother's life. For the first time in their lives, Vincent was better than Anton at something. Even though everybody believed that he wasn't good enough to acheive his goals, Vincent now believed that he could achieve anything that he set his mind to. Vincent decided to run away from home and he got a job as a janitor at Gattaca. This was his first glimpse of Gattaca, and he liked what he saw.…

Irene’s self-esteem not only continues to deteriorate, but displays of internalized racism begin to present themselves through illogical thought and irrationality. Irene describes Brian in the same way she does Clare as, “extremely good-looking” (Larsen 77). Irene, does not view herself as “good-looking”, therefore she believes herself unworthy of Brian an “extremely good-looking” man, so she assumes Brian and Clare are engaging in an affair.
