When the towns people found out Hester had a daughter she tried to explain that it happened from unwanted sexual behavior, but in this period of time it was look upon as a horrible thing if you had a child and where not married and they would not listen. Her character is one to admirer because she accepted her sin of having a child and is remorseful of her wrongdoing. They gave her a red letter “A” to put on and wear at all times to show she was an outcast from the normal town’s people. The govern punished her by making her stand in what they called “Open Square” for four hours with the baby to show what she has done. While on the platform the minister by the name Arthur Dimmesdale, who was the youngest minister in town asked her one question “You have to tell us the name of the child’s father” (CH.1 Page 2).
