The Pilgrimage of Grace was a march by armed demonstrators during the beginning of the Protestant Reformation of England. It started when the head of the Kings council Lord Thomas Cromwell implemented a series of laws that caused the dissolution of monasteries, and the confiscation of catholic lands. The goals of the Pilgrimage of Grace was to restore the monasteries, reinstate the pope as the head of the church, and to get rid of protestant officials in the government. The Kings response was at first to try and placate the masses but later on he set out to just quell the "rebellion" through public trials.…

How the Dutch and English became successful was not only in trading but being merchants and bankers as well. When the other countries were busy fighting each other the Dutch were specializing in trading with them. Out of 20,000 trading vessels 16,000 of them were Dutch ships." In the early 1400's two thirds were based in Amsterdam."The English and Dutch went to war over trading not only once but three times. The first was fought in 1652-54 the second in 1665-67 the third and final was in 1672-74 with the Dutch being the victor at Solo Bay in 1672. The most important thing to the Dutch was there trading, they even came up with something called the Maritime Insurance: with this people didn't lose out on the profit. When the ships left port and out to sea nobody knew what would happen or if they were going to make it back, till the ship sailed into the harbor once aging. The Dutch even design a ship that was able to carry more goods and less people, it was a large bulk- carrying vessel called a flute or fly boat. The Dutch had trading stations and supply depots in many ports to name a few were: Norway, Ceylon, Java, Sumatra, Formosa," which they took control of by 1641." They were also the first to dominate the Baltic trade route between Spain, France, and England. The Dutch were able to pay a higher price for your goods and also give you credit, in doing this even if the crops were not ready yet the farmers still made sure they had something to sell to the Dutch. This meant a lower profit margin but the Dutch were able to profit since they had so much trade. There was even a market for Dutch paintings they were the first one to paint every day citizens doing every day things: form standing at the market, celebrations, or just having a good time. The colors and demotions of the paintings is what made they more life like.…

Hadewijch of Brabant was a 13thcentury writer of letters, poems, and narratives. In her writings, she writes diligently in love toward Christ and the Eucharist. In her Letters and Visions, she speaks often of good deeds and treating all with love, which in all, gives to God. For example, in her 6th letter To Live Christ, paragraph 54 describes an instance of a man desiring love but always coming in contact with misery and grief. “Be generous to him so far as lies in your and pour yourself out in helping him.” Her belief is that “it is with our struggles and our suffering for we demand God as a reward for our good works and we wish to feel him present in this life” (pg 363). She puts much emphasis on deeds and Love that throughout her writings…

During this semester, we have taken a look at a number of African American literature in which a variety of themes have appeared. One reading we dove into was Amiri Baraka’s play called Dutchman. This play displays an interaction between two main characters by the names of Clay and Lula. The readers are introduced to this story with Lula accusing Clay of watching her from the train window. From there, Lula manipulates almost everything that Clay says and does until she finally kills him in the end. A variety of things happen throughout this play that help to highlight the relationship that was shared between the races of…

Death has been the consequent for the main characters in each of the first four novels read for the course. The protagonist in each of the first four novels; Werther, Rafael, Ivan Ilyich, and K., respectively; met their demise on the final page of their respective novels. All four directly or indirectly were the cause of their painful demise. Werther chose suicide over conforming to the ways of adulthood, and moving further away from nature. Rafael chose to live a life of possessions, and in turn, his inner-self dwindled. Ivan Ilyich alienated himself from those around him, and hid behind the aristocratic social mask. Finally, Joseph K. causes his won demise by being a puppet of society, conforming to all rules, and to his own sense of guilt. Ivan Ilyich was the only character to somewhat remedy the situation before slipping into the darkness of death. In all cases, the actions of the lives of all four protagonists very clearly displayed their weaknesses as characters.…

    My Last Dutches

    • 3060 Words

Written in 1842 by Robert Browning, "My Last Duchess" is the dramatic monologue of the duke of Ferrara who is negotiating his second marriage through an agent of the count of Tyrol on the grand staircase of the ducal palace at Ferrara in northern Italy. Executing the elements of a dramatic monologue, the duke reveals his situation and much more than he intends to the both the agent and the reader. Using iambic pentameter AABB couplets Robert Browning reveals the horrifying story of the murder of the duke's previous wife through the duke's conversation with the agent. As the duke attempts to paint an inaccurate picture of himself to the agent, desiring to appear as a nobel, but abused and caring, loving husband who had no choice but to murder his prideful, disrespectful wife, the duke's true controlling, manipulative, jealous nature is revealed. The duke's desire for control is made evident by the structure of the poem, through his appreciation of art, and his response to the trivial incidences that led to the death of his wife. The frequent use of caesura throughout the poem emphasize the duke's control over the conversation. The duke's appreciation of art reveals the control he has over the artists that produce his works of art; the portrait of his last duchess and the statue of Neptune. Although the duke was unable to control the duchess when she was alive, after her death he is in complete control of her. The duke says "none puts by the curtain I have drawn for you, but I," revealing that now he is able to control both the duchess's countenance and who views the portrait by a curtain covering the portrait (10). The duke's loss of control is also depicted through the rhythm of the poem. The run over lines in the poem, or enjambment in the poem, reveal the duke's nervous uneasiness over his wife's murder. For example, near the end of the poem, the duke loses control. The reader can only imagine the horrified agent rising to go down the staircase, the duke's…
