The Chrysalids: The 5-Paragraph Essay

THE BASICS
• 12-Point Times New Roman
• 3-4 Pages, double-spaced
• 1-inch margins on all sides
• Should be written in a formal tone (third person, no contractions or slang)

STRUCTURE
This will be a 5-Paragraph Essay. You will be evaluated not only on the content of your essay, but also on your ability to follow the proper 5-Paragraph Essay Format:

Introduction
• Features a clear hook, designed to grab the reader’s attention and pull them into your essay
• Outlines what you will be talking about in the body of your paper
• The last sentence of your Introductory Paragraph should be your Thesis Statement: o Thesis Statement  General Claim + 3 Reasons o Should feature the book title and author’s name

Body Paragraphs
• Should follow the Hamburger Paragraph format
• Should each feature 3 clear examples or pieces of evidence from the novel to support your claim
• Should each feature 3 quotations from the book, one for each piece of evidence
• Should each feature detailed explanations (at least 2-3 sentences) that relate your quotation to your claim and demonstrate why it is correct

Conclusion
• Restate your thesis
• Recap of evidence – briefly go back over each of your body paragraphs and sum up what you said in each (about 2 sentences per. body paragraph)
• Concluding Statement – This should be moving back toward the general, the “so what?” What is the take-away from your essay? (Note: DO NOT introduce new information here

TOPICS
