Thomas Hobbes and John Locke built on conventional notions about the role of government and the relationship of the government to the people in proposing a social contract theory of government. The social contract theory is the belief that people are free and equal by natural right, and that this in turn requires that al people give their consent to be governed; espoused by John Locke and was influential in the Declaration of Independence. According to Locke, people form governments largely to preserve life, liberty, property, and to ensure justice.…

Adrienne Rich once said “Lying is done with words, but also with silence”. This quote means that lying is done when someone is not only saying the truth, but knowing the truth and keeping it to themselves and not saying anything. It can also mean keeping a secret from someone and not knowing the consequence that can happen. I agree with this statement because now and days people either lie or keep the truth to themselves when needing the truth can make a difference. In the play Othello by William Shakespeare, characters like Iago and Emilia seem to know the truth about something, but decide not to speak about it with anyone.…

Sports are among the greatest of human pleasures, [and] one of the U.S.’ biggest industries…”(Sheed, 1995, p. 10). Success is considered by many to be the most important goal of sports, and at the level of professional sports, winning is the ultimate goal. Because winning is so important, athletes, whether they are young or old, professional or amateur, are always looking to gain an advantage over their opponents. The desire for an “edge” exists in all sports, at all levels of play. The challenges created in sports by stardom, soaring paychecks, personal glory and favoritism have collectively worked to increase the prevalence of performance enhancing drugs in recent years. Despite the fact that many of these types of substances are illegal, the drive in athletes to be the best still outweighs any of the adverse effects that are caused by these drugs or, the consequences they pose. The truth is performance-enhancing drugs in sports are unsafe, unethical and they [This is a run-on sentence because there is not a comma before the conjunction. I probably should have said what I meant. The last time I did not say what I meant, I said what I thought I did not mean. By saying what I thought I meant, hopefully my intent would have been made vivid by saying what I did not really mean. The Ultimate Truth

Truth by definition as according to Merriam-Webster Dictionary is a judgment, proposition, or idea that is true or accepted as true. But how as individuals do we know if something is true? Our knowledge of what is true in my opinion comes from multiple aspects. For example, by using the mind we rationalize and logically think out situations we observe through our senses to understand how, why and if something is true. But we don’t only use one of our senses to know if something is true we use all of them. We use the ability to see, taste, smell, touch, hear and apply it to our daily lives to test ideas to see if they are true. So basically we use the scientific method in our daily lives subconsciously without even realizing it. Personally I do not use tradition or religious beliefs as tools in seeking truth as individuals once did in the pre-modern European era because what may have been at one time seen as “true” may not be currently based on environment, circumstances, and situations. For example in pre-modern European times they relied somewhat on their senses but immensely on their Judea Christian beliefs because this is what they were told to be true by their hierarchy. Previous thought relied more on the whole rather than the individual; there really was no sense of “self” during this era.…

The question of right and wrong has been battled for years. To many, the concept of truth is deep, confidential and indefinable. In fact, it has been said that "The discovery of truth is the sole purpose of philosophy". Clearly, we are in deep water on this topic. Some believe in absolute truth, while others believe truth is relative. I believe truth is not absolute when it comes to the names of physical things. Nevertheless, I do believe truth is absolute when it comes to moral things. Aside from those, I believe that God is absolutely true.…
