Hideo Kojima is known to be one of the most passionate and innovative game directors that has ever set foot upon the video game industry. Gamers all over the world acknowledge him to be the father of several successful franchises such as Policenauts, Zone of the Enders and most notably Metal Gear. But what sets this man apart from other developers, is the unique application of cinematic and profound storytelling techniques to many of his most influential games. These two styles of Japanese art mainly focus upon science fiction and fantasy related themes. And so, a grand example of such influence exists in Policenauts, which was a game that took place in a futuristic environment set in outer space. Another good example is The Zone of the Enders series, which featured towering mechanical robots controlled by human pilots to fight off alien threats. The Metal Gear Solid compilation even introduced a Bishonen character, which is a common asset associated with Anime and Manga. Put simply, Bishonen essentially describes a man who possesses a certain degree of beauty that even transcends his own gender. In other words, the series featured a male character that could be easily mistaken as a female. There is also a distinct use of overly “dramatic moments” made by several of Kojima’s characters, in which they appear during a scene in an over exaggerated fashion. In Anime and Manga, this is also very common, especially during suspenseful moments before an epic duel or even during love scenes between two people. Aside from this, the concept art for most of Kojima’s games is drawn in the traditional Manga style, which is comparable to the type of illustrations present in American comic books or graphic novels.
