The Rosetta Stone is a stone with two types of writing on it: Egyptian and Greek. Comparing these two languages gave a better understanding of the hieroglyphic alphabet. Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs are all based on pictures. Other hieroglyphic styles developed simultaneously with an easier and quicker alternative to write information. As you can imagine, writing in pictures, especially in color, would be a very time consuming way of writing. Therefore, in hieroglyphic writings, it was common to leave out vowels.
