High Cost of College Textbooks
The High Cost of College Textbooks
Thomas Jefferson said that “ Books Constitute Capital !”, and by that saying from over one hundred years ago it still stands today. The high cost of college textbooks is not only an issue here at Delgado Community College, but with almost every college student across the nation. Rather new or used textbooks are overpriced, but students can save money by buying digital textbooks.
One of the main reasons why college textbooks are so expensive is because they are overpriced. The publishers set the prices. The bookstore has no control. The publishers of the textbooks are in the habit of bringing new editions quite frequently. Most students hesitate to buy old editions fearing that they will miss out on something. In fact, many professors list a new edition in their book list every semester,( Experiencing Psychology textbook for example), purchased at the DCC bookstore for $112. The upside of that is that it’s a wonderful book, but the downside is that I don’t even use the book in class. Most textbooks are overpriced because they come in packages, which might include CD’s and supplementary materials which are really not required ( Ruszkie /How to Write Anything $121.48,DCC bookstore ); however, students are forced to give more money because of the extras. The majority of publishers do not do anything about the high cost of college textbooks. Why would they? Because college textbooks are one of the most profitable sectors for the publishing industry. A Government Accountability Office report found that in the past two decades, college textbook prices have increased at twice the rate of inflation. In academic year 2003-04, students and their families spent more than $6 billion on new and used textbooks.
At two-year public institutions such as Delgado where low-income students are more likely to pursue a degree program and tuition and fees are lower, the average estimated cost of books and supplies per first-time full-time student is

Statistics clearly show that the cost of education in the United States is on the rise in recent years than any other time in history. Despite the fact that the government is straining to subsidize the tuition cost, the costs of educating children both in elementary and high school as well as at the college level are still rising owing to the increased cost of books in the country. The high cost incurred in the purchase of learning materials especially texts books makes it hard for low-income families to finance their children at the elementary level, high school level as well as college level. However, it is worth noting that education is a sensitive issue to be left in the hands of parents alone. Publishers, especially those publishing curriculum related textbooks have been increasing the prices of their products now and then to cover their losses considering that there is extensive and effective second-book market in the…

Reading "" by Jon Marcus talks about why are text books and college cost so expensive. How I feel about text books and college being expensive is not fair because after college people are in debt and you only used textbooks at least one semester. I don't agree that we should have software for textbooks because people like me like to write and feel the looseleaf paper textbooks. I understand the paper textbooks or hardback textbooks better then online it gives you more information. However, the online textbooks would be good to look up words we do not know or give us more in depth of the paragraph we are reading. Being in debt is not good especially when some people only go for 2-3 years and not finish but it is their fault for not finishing…

The graph above tells us that the price of textbooks have risen more than the amount of average for goods and services. At some point in the year 1970’s books started to get expensive. Publishers capitalized on professors’ willingness to adapt new editions of a book every two or three years. Textbooks became less about educating the masses and more about exclusivity and profitability. As we can see in the 1990s, the textbook market is shared by small number of producers or sellers, thus prices skyrocketed. That is however not the only reason as to why it has increased that much.…

The fact that textbooks are unaffordable to college students have become a nationwide concern. According to U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO), textbook prices in 2004 were three times than that in 1986, with an average annual growth rate of 6%. Saving cost on textbooks is important because students need affordable textbooks to improve their study performance. A number of institutions at federal, state, and college levels have tried to find out the reasons behind the soaring price of textbooks and proposed different alternatives for students, such as low-cost used books, book rental and online resources. Meanwhile, others also claimed that the roots of soaring prices of textbooks chase back to more fundamental areas – the mechanism…

    Tablets v. Textbooks

First of all, those who oppose this idea believe that a tablet is more expensive than a print text book. Technology does not necessarily translate into more expensive though. According to a report from the Federal Communications Commission schools kindergarten through twelfth grade spend on average around eight billion dollars a year on text books. If these schools switched from text books to the ever popularizing E-book these schools can save anywhere from two hundred fifty to one thousand dollars per student per year. If you calculate this an average school has about five thousand to seven thousand students which translates to a 5 to 7 hundred thousand dollar savings that can go towards other things in the school. Most E-books cost about four hundred fifty dollars where as a textbook can cost upwards of six hundred dollars. So, this idea of tablets being more expensive is preposterous, and comes from the common idea of technology means more money which has no factual evidence to back it.…
