High School Cheerleading Essay
School Cheer A game was played in 1869, between Princeton University and Rutgers University in New Jersey, and by the 1880s, Princeton had formed an all-male pep club. In 1898, U of M was on a losing streak, and a medical student named Johnny Campbell assembled a group to energize the team and the crowd. Johnny picked up a megaphone and rallied the team to victory. Cheerleading grew from there. It wasn’t until 1923 that women were allowed to cheer for the first time. During this decade, cheerleaders added tumbling and acrobatics to their routines. In 1948, Southern Methodist University cheerleader Lawrence Herkimer held the first summer cheerleading clinic at Sam Houston State Teacher’s College and went on to develop his signature “Herkie” …show more content…
By 1990, school cheerleading reaches 1.7 million athletes in the USA (source: National Federation of High School Associations); additionally, due to its popularity and overflow of interested athletes. Cheerleading is currently established in 79 countries with over 4.5 million cheerleaders worldwide. Every cheerleader gets fired up when someone sparks the "Is cheerleading a sport?" debate. Whether it’s a football player, a basketball player, or a friend who doesn’t understand why you’re not involved in something else “more athletic,” you want people to know that cheerleaders are athletes. 71% say that cheer is a sport and I agree with them. The transition from high school cheerleading to college cheerleading can be a challenge. There are many different aspects of being a college cheerleader compared to the good ole high school days. For most new college cheerleaders, the first game day will be the day you look most forward to. A larger crowd, more spirit, and fans that genuinely care if the team wins the game. As a cheerleader and large representative of your school, it’s necessary to be a big of a fan as well. Why? Because as a college cheerleader, when the team travels, you travel. Whether the game is a van, car, or plane ride away, it will be your responsibility to travel and cheer at all or most of the games, no matter what the distance may

Cheerleaders are athletes too. They practice just as much as everyone else, sometimes even more. They get hurt just like everyone else, but only more severely. In “Sis! Boom! Bah! Humbug!” Rick Reilly attempts to get people of his side of cheerleading as a sport or in his mind not a sport. He does not want girls cheering on the other athletes at sporting events when they could be in the event instead. Rick Reilly conveys his message through a sandwich of logos, pathos, logos statements; this was very effective in my eyes even if at points he turned the majority of readers away with sarcastic anecdotes, but he manages to bring most back through his use of assertions.…

The stadium is well known for its hosting duties of the SEC baseball tournament, showcasing the top twelve teams in the Southeastern Conference. However, most Friday nights, the stadium is occupied by Hoover football fans and players. Once the band arrives, we line up and march into the stadium to our cadence. Marching begins right outside of the buses, continues into the stadium, and ends once we have reached the section of the stadium, which has been designated for the band, prior to the fans arrival. The band plays a few stand chants while the Buccanettes dance along. Once the clock strikes 10 minutes until the game, the band marches behind the visiting stands to line up for pregame. Pregame includes the entire band marching onto the field to a cadence, turning towards the audience, standing at attention, then playing the national anthem and alma matter. After these two songs are played the band will march into a new formation on the field that will allow the players to run through while the band plays the fight song. Buccanettes stand in front of the band doing our stand dance to this tune, the cheerleaders held a huge sign for the players to run through and the colorguard would run across the field with large Buccaneer flags. The audience’s reaction made the all the previous hours of getting ready worthwhile. The student section was filled with shakers, lettermen, and hundreds of students. The rest of the stadium was filled with fans from the community. After pregame, the band would march back to the stands to begin more stand chants. The band played tunes such as ESPN, sunshine, the fight song, word up, and many others. At the beginning of the second quarter we would again march out of the stadium where stretching would take place to warm up for the halftime show. The first thing…

Allstar Cheerleading is not like cheerleading for your school. It is much more excruciating than standing on a sideline, clapping and yelling "Go Team Go!" From experience, Allstar Cheerleaders go through grueling practices of sweating, long periods of conditioning, and lifting people. Yes, i said it, people. Football players condition so that they can run back and forth on a field for a few hours with breaks every couple of minutes. Cheerleaders condition so that they can make it through a to and half minute routine that includes orderly running from formation to formation, jumping in certain ways that require extreme flexibility and muscular strength, as well as lifting girls, the same age and weight as that of the girls lifting them above their heads so that the flyer can pull a motion that takes months to achieve. Competitive cheerleading has never been called a sport according to the government. There has been an ongoing debate as to if cheerleading fits the definition of a sport which is “an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature” (Dictionary.com n.d.). By that definition you could interpret it to mean cheerleading is a sport, but there is much more to being a sport than meeting a definition. Competitive cheerleading does require specialized training, extensive practices, and a dedicated team; but to become a sport there are several problems that must be addressed. There is not a consistent set of competitions, no standard set of rules, and no regulations for judging. There has also been many court debates on this subject with cheerleading always on the losing end. In order for cheerleading to become a sport these problems must be addressed. Once this is addressed then cheerleading could become an official sport and the athletes would be eligible for athletic scholarships for full tuition amounts.…

In my opinion I think that Cheerleading should be a competitive sport because cheerleaders work as hard as all other sport players do. For example cheerleaders show muscle, athleticism and agility when practicing and cheering at games. Cheerleaders show muscle because they lift other people they throw and stack people on top of other people to make a pyramid. They show Agility because when doing cheers they have to make sharp and quick movements with their hands and their feet. I don’t think that it’s fair that cheerleading isn’t a competitive sport because it doesn’t involve a ball. That is why I think that cheerleading is just as much as a sport than any other…

It teaches the importance of certain life qualities and some lessons to take away. The cheerleaders compete at compititions against other teams. Knowing this information still makes people indecisive in their decision of if cheer qualifies as a sport. According to Eileen Lofrese (Macedo, 2010, para. 10-11), most people can’t decide whether cheer is a sport or not because of its inconsistency. Some schools may only have a cheer team that cheers at games, but other schools have a competitive varsity team. Coach Stevens (personal communication, January 20, 2016) says that she believes cheer is a sport that isn’t fully developed yet. She…

A sport is defined as “an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature” (Dictionary.com). Someone can’t roll out of bed and be an amazing cheerleader. Cheerleading is an activity that takes massive amounts of skill and physical prowess, but on July 22nd of 2010 Connecticut Judge Stefan R. Underhill ruled competitive cheerleading as not being a sport. Considering the physical demand of the activity, the court system should reconsider competitive cheerleading as a sport.…

Competition cheer is one type of cheerleading. It is usually associated with a gym that teaches tumbling, gymnastics, and cheerleading all in one. Most of the squads have more than one coach such as a tumbling coach, a stunting coach, and a choreographer. Competition cheerleaders have one main objective which is to compete. Since they are competing, the squad must be dedicated to practicing and performing. The cheerleaders do not cheer for other sports such as basketball or football like in high school. They also do not use offense or defense cheers, but they use “competition cheers” instead. Just like being in other sports in school, you must try out to be on the team. Competition tryouts are a lot harder than in high school. You must go through…

The department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights actually told schools to not include cheerleading as a sport because the sport of cheer is gender biased. Perhaps this would be so, but many cheerleading teams all across the nation allow various opportunities for males to partake in the sport of cheerleading in which they are treated equally. For example, in the United Kingdom males and females wear the same cheerleading uniform (UKCA) which is a prime example of how males and females are treated equally.…
