The research topic that I will be investigating is the relationship between high impact sports and their negative health effects, specifically the effort to make these sports safer. The research that I looked at in the past went slightly into the effects of these sports on children. It also made a point of criticizing society on why we feel the way that we do on this issue. Mainly, why we tend to care more about our health in regards to many other issues. The article Don't let kids Play Football, by Bennet Omalu does a good job of providing evidence and reasons on why not to let children play football. My current belief on this issue though is that while these sports have many negative effects, they are too ingrained in our culture to ban…
In America sports are important but football seems to be vastly more important and more widely known as a specifically American sport. The overwhelming topic on any sports network such as ESPN and the NFL Network are the growing number of lawsuits against the National Football League concerning head injuries and lack of concern that the leaders of the NFL had about the risk players were being put in. Both sides of the lawsuits are passionate about their ideas and making sure that they are not only heard but that action will take place to resolve the situation as a whole. George Orwell states that “one can choose – not simply accept – the phrases that will best cover the meaning, and then switch around and decide what impression one’s words are likely to make on another person”. (115) The power of words can make or break an argument; the words surrounding the NFL Controversy are no different inevitable, permanent and intentionally misleading players putting them at serious health risk.…
Involvement in sports and recreation activities may cause traumatic brain injury. A Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) occurs when an external force traumatically injures the brain. This is a serious current event that needs to brought to the attention of people. Thousands of people die yearly due to TBIs. Compared to adults, children and adolescents are at a higher risk for traumatic brain injury with more severe injuries and prolonged recovery. It is recommended by some experts that children do not play in a tackle football league till fourteen years of age. This is due to the fact that a child’s brain can be seriously harmed when playing and does not fully develop till 21-25 years of age. Some people don’t have full brain development till they are in their early 30’s or late 20’s. Even wearing a helmet cannot fully protect your head.…
Many sports related injuries do not just happen to professional teams but occur on youth, high school, and college teams. Concussions, knee sprains, stress fractures happen often and are now considered common injuries. Parents do not get overly worried, like they should, due to the severity of these injuries that happen to their children. In reality, the real problems are how parents encourage their children to be extremely competitive on the field and play aggressively, the amount of traumatic injuries that occur on the field, and how it is affecting the futures of young athletes. These are the reasons why youth sports are becoming too violent to be safe for children.…

Well, it is called a concussion and many children get them every day in a game called football. But, that's not the only dangerous sport. Soccer, lacrosse, hockey, baseball cause concussions, broken bones even death! Even though some might argue that sports teach lessons and keep kids healthy. It may only take a couple of seconds for a college football player’s career or season to be taken away from him. Hundreds of college football players get hurt every year; most are sidelined for just a couple of weeks. Some players, however, lose their entire season and even careers to just one injury. When a player is not able to play the entire season, they may lose their scholarship. Standing on a football field’s sideline with an injury is one of the worst feelings a player can have. Normally, teams only have one or two players who can start at a position. Knowing which positions get hurt the most would be useful, because a coach or manager then knows which positions he needs to draft or recruit to his team, so there are more than one or two players capable of playing the position. If for example, offensive running backs are the most prone to being injured, a coach can recruit and train…
Playing sports can be very fun and entertaining, but there can also be risks that come along the way that detract from the enjoyment. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, as stated before Nearly 30 million U.S. children and youth are involved in organized sports. Also “high school athletes account for an estimated 2 million injuries, 500,000 doctor visits, and 30,000 hospitalizations each year” (Alvarez, 2014). As the article says there are too many teens who play in high school sports that are getting injured year round. The number would largely decrease if someone who is certified in sports injuries, like an athletic trainer, was there at games and…
Recent studies show that football players are likely to have brain trauma and will be affected in the long run. Because of the abnormal buildup of protein in the brain, it causes the tissue to be degenerated. Although brain trauma can become a problem for anyone at any time, football is a push for the problem. One of the common effects on the brain is chronic traumatic encephalopathy, which is the loss of memory, emotional and aggression control. After all, football should be banned from high school sports because chronic traumatic encephalopathy is not worth anyone's life, stress is brought upon families because of their concern, and the health risk makes it worth the process.…
