Not only that, but I want to participate in the Leadership
Development Program because I can still remember how confused and stressed out I was because of all the unknown variables that came into play when I was thinking about what being a UCI student really means. And my experience with the mentor I had when I did Summer Bridge really reassured me and made me believe that I can succeed here. This experience got me excited to be an anteater, and I want to do that for the next class of incoming freshmen. I want to be the one to help them. I want to be the one to help raise their confidence and be a source of information of what they should expect in what will be an exciting year for them.
The skills I am hoping to gain from participating in the Leadership Development Program is enhancing my leadership skills. I want to be able to reinforce valuable leadership lessons and teach someone in an effective manner. By routinely doing this, I believe it can make me work harder to live up to the expectations any mentees may have of me. After all, I can't be expected to advise someone to work hard and do things that I'm not willing to do personally myself. Meaning that by gaining more experience as a mentor and leading someone to become the best that they can, I in return, am also pushing myself to become the best that I can. Also, I believe that a mentor is someone that can and will go the extra mile to help others and to just be a positive influence all around; which is a skill I want to develop. The skill of regularly going the extra mile. To do activities that I may not be comfortable with, but are activities I know that will benefit me in the future.
