As his School Counselor, I was able to witness Jake’s exemplary attitude and remarkable passion to be successful academically. He is active with other school affairs as well. He is a member of the school’s lacrosse team and the basketball team. He is a member of the National Honor Society and is also part of the Student…
After the swift separation of his parents many things had begun to change in Justin’s normal routine life. Beginning his years as a middle school student at George K. Porter Magnet Middle School, Justin was introduced to a completely new environment. Attending Porter enabled him to gain the friendships of kids whom were just like him, friendships in which he still holds till this very day. These years would prove to be a learning experience not just academically but socially. Justin was apart of various clubs one being on the Leadership Council. Planning and organizing various school events he gained a well-rounded sense of responsibility he still leans on…
My search for a research site has brought me to various establishments, but choosing one that allows me to observe without any feelings of violations towards any individual is very tricky. My first few chosen sites felt uncomfortable, these were at a park (children playground), a bus stop, and a bank. Yes, I know. These places made me felt as if, I was the one being watched. My other places (ones that I didn’t get a chance to entertain were, a library, Dave and Busters, and a public train. However, after noticing a group of children walking with assistance heading towards a daycare located on Hempstead Avenue in Queens village, I decided to enquire about the daycare. At first I wasn’t able to see the director, but after making an appointment…
Greg “Slam” Harris loves basketball. He can play really well and feels in control when he has the ball. When Mr. Tate, the school principal, tells Greg’s mother that Slam should stop playing basketball until he can boost his grades up,he feels that he can't give up basketball for anything.Because of this, Greg feels as if he can’t sleep at night and he is not able to be focused. Greg can hear the wind, boom boxes, and people talking outside, and police and ambulance sirens. Greg thinks about things that bother him over and over again. Greg loves his mom. His mom is worried about his grades. She almost cries at Mr. Tate’s office. Greg’s father Pops works here and there. When he works, he doesn’t drink too much. Slam’s younger brother, nine…
During the third week at Agnew Middle School, my target was to observe Ms. Davis’ classroom procedures.…
A school that has history, this school was established in 1867 and went public in 1888. Looking at RRHS when you first pull up seems like a descent size school with a modest old look. When you drive around the school it is expanded out much like a junior college and has a college feeling. There are 11 buildings on this campus not including their football field, track, marching band pad, baseball field and the amount of parking for both students and staff.…
I have had the opportunity to go to two middle schools due to moving locations. This paper is going to be based on my experiences at Hermosa Middle School in Farmington, New Mexico. Since, this where I started caring more about my education and I can relate more to this placement. To begin with, Hermosa Middle School serves grade from 6th-8th. The demographic in this school is about 42% Caucasian, 31% Hispanic, 23% Native-American, 2% Asian, and 2% African-American. Notice, that there is a high population of Hispanics, I believe that this is why I started to be more involve at school. Prior to moving to Farmington, New Mexico; I lived and attended a junior high school in Huntington, Utah where 5% were Hispanic. I can honestly state, “That Hermosa Middle School is a contemporary developmentally responsive middle schools”. I quote this because I can point out the differences between what both schools had offered me as a student.…
Gymboree is a program designed to help children learn and develop through play. This is a unique program because it incorporates parents within the program. The program I evaluated was a preschool prep program designed for children from the age of 28 months to 3 years old. Preschool prep is structured like a preschool class and helps the child prepare for when they start preschool. The class I evaluated was held two days a week from 2:30-4:30 on Tuesdays and Thursdays. I attended the Tuesday class on October 15, 2015. Gymboree has locations across the country; however, I attended the one located at Valencia Mall in Valencia, CA. Demographically, 76% of the population is Caucasian (source?). Valencia is a suburb of Los Angeles, and is known…
Washington Elementary School is located in West Orange, New Jersey in a neighborhood where mostly African American and Hispanic businesses and people were surrounding the area. As I arrived to the school or left, I usually only saw minorities in the surrounding neighborhood. This correlated with the students I saw in the classroom I observed, and throughout the school. In the classroom there was a total of 17 students, all of which were minorities. Ten of the students are Hispanic and seven are African American. I did not see too many White or Asian students throughout the school, or in the neighborhood. However, the racial and ethnic demographics for West Orange showed that the majority of the population is White. Statistics on race and ethnicity show that 62.1% of West Orange identify as being White, 17.1% as being Black, 10% as being Hispanic, 8.1% as being Asian, 2.4% as being two…
In his senior year, it seemed almost impossible for Josh to be able to graduate at the current rate he was going about his grades. One of Josh’s teacher’s saw this and began to push and pull him out of his slump and help him bring his grades up enough so that he was able to graduate, even if by a slim margin. He then went to UMD, proceeded to get kicked out because he was still going through his depression, went to Anoka Ramsey Community College, ended up quitting, then finally went back to UMD after several motivating factors. One of the greatest reasons he was able to progress was through the support of his family and friends, who always pushed him but never past his comfort zone. He also told us that there were some people in his life who told him he’d never be able to do it and even that helped to fuel his energy to get back into it and complete college. When asked why he took a year off before going back to college again, he stated “You should never go to college for anyone but yourself”. Josh was very persistent in life and refused to give up even when those around him told him he’d never be able to do it, he tried his best to prove them wrong, and…
Over the past few weeks, the struggling student that I have been observing is called A. I started to know A better when he was undertaking a center plan activity during the literacy class. I inquired about him and he told me that his name is A and he is 6 years old. I asked A about his family back home. He told me that everyone at his home was okay. I probed him for more information about his family and he told me that he lives with his mother and two sisters. He mentioned that both of his sisters are older than him and that his mother is a nurse. When I asked him about other family members, he said that his grandfather comes to visit them once in a while and that he always brings him a gift. For example, the last time A was visited by his…
Doing an observation of someone you kind of have this idea in the back of your head of what kind of job he has. I realized that the image you have in your mind really is just what the everyday person sees. While I observed Keith Lytle I figured I would just see the same normal stuff that I see all the time when on the baseball field. I was wrong in so many ways. Keith not only has to break down the swings of the hitters on the team and put them through drills so make sure their swing is where it needs to be; he also works with the position players as well on the fielding aspects on the game. Once he was done with the practice side of things, Keith went into his office and started making some phone calls to see if there were any kids who were on his list who were interested in attending the program for next season. After the phone calls had been made he went outside to what we on the team would call his second car. He started up the lawn mower and began mowing the field, which he does every single day.…
My observation of my sister has to with her development of her thinking process. I had given her a math evaluation and I wanted to tester her in four areas of math. Addition and subtraction, multiplication and division, algebra and geometry were subjects used. The object of this evaluation is to observe the test subject on how one method is used and is it transitions to the next level of math.…
A very important young girl and boy in my life, had let me into their lives in order to complete this assignment, allowing me to understand the small and major differences between a healthy child and an autistic child. This observation assignment concerns the physical domain, but more specifically the development of gross motor skills. The purpose of this observation is to determine the differences in gross motor skills between a special needs child of age two, versus the healthy child of age three, while comparing these results to the descriptions of gross motor skills as found in Infants and Children by Laura Berk (2008) and the consistency between them.…
Sapienza and colleagues (2002) sought to explore the effects of a high-intensity, low-repetition expiratory muscle strength training method in 40 healthy high school band players. The participants included 18 males and 22 females who were non-smokers and uneducated in expiratory strength training. The authors indicated the average age of participants was 21 years old, which is inconsistent with the age of high school students. The participants were assigned to a control or treatment group with 7 males and 7 females in each control group. There was no description regarding participant assignment procedures, therefore it is unknown if randomization occurred. The treatment group trained 5 days per week for 2 weeks under supervision. The findings…
