High School Swimming Research Paper
I am a high school student who tries to balance the amount of sports I participate in with the arts. Every fall, I participate in high school swimming; every winter I participate in archery and Family of Christ’s all church musical; every spring I participate in high school softball; every summer I spend swimming on a club team while training for archery and softball over the off season; while year round I take piano lessons and participate in rehearsals for my church’s student led choir. Needless to say, I’ve encountered many coaches who have helped shaped me to become who I am today. Although most of my coaches didn’t realize it, I looked up to them more than my teachers, parents and peers. They have become apart of an influential seasonal family, instilling their beliefs upon me through their coaching. I will never forget my first year I joined the swim team. It was the middle of the season and my coach was fed up with the amount of girls who were missing swimming because they were falling behind in school. Just like we did everyday, we changed into our swimsuits, grabbed our mesh bags that contained all of our equipment, walked onto the pool deck and sat down on the bleachers. As the last few girls filtered out of the locker room and the clock neared 3:25, our coach walked over to us to begin our daily meeting. By the look on her face, you could tell this was not going to be an ordinary meeting. Right before she spoke, her face muscles tightened and then she said, “girls, you need to get your priorities straight. …show more content…
Because, believe me. There not. In fact, many are quite the opposite. They are positive and are always there encouraging you to do your best. But, when you spend your day training with them, it doesn’t matter if you have a positive or negative coach. They still fill your mind with their opinions, leaving you to figure out if you should take or leave the newest advice they just gave

John Wooden might have been the coach I needed when participating in Track and Field for my local high school in Madera, CA. Since it was the first and only high school sport I chose to take part in, mostly due to the fact my friends were on the team, I was unfamiliar with what a good coach was and if he or she would actually make an athlete out of me. Reading about Wooden’s dissatisfaction with society’ focus on grades rather than one’s effort and his choice to focus on developing his player’s bodies and minds rather than hounding them to win, I have realized that my Track and Field coach is also one of those men who would have us perform to the best of our ability and lose rather than give a lackluster performance and win simply because of…

I decided to advocate to the coach about my involvement in the practices as a player. As I walked into the hot and humid office of the coach, I waited until he was not as busy with his work. As the fan turned, he finally stopped what he was doing, “What’s up, Ariana?” the coach voiced. I explained my aspirations to play basketball. As I spoke, I watched his face, trying to get a sense of what he was thinking. After I stopped talking, I waited for his answer. He moved around as if it would help him figure out what to say when he knew his answer was…

As early as the third grade, I remember being involved in sports. Whether it was volleyball, basketball, or dance I have been given the privilege to play on many teams. The life of a young athlete is great, however, it can become very stressful. At all ages an athlete is forced to cope with school, sports, and a social life. Along with all of that, athletes are expected to deal with extra stress and even stricter rules. Over the years I have realized all student-athletes are treated differently and are held to a higher standard. (1)…

I may not be a starter for my baseball team, I may not play near as much as I want, but I still work hard and I still want to prove people wrong. I know that I’m not the best, but like Dustin Pedroia, I will work to be better, to prove people wrong, and to succeed in what I do, whether it’s sports, coaching or academics. But without the coaches that worked with him to get better, Dustin would’ve never succeeded and in my case that is especially true. One coach in particular is coach Ohlau who, no matter what worked with me whether it was in the baseball camps, after practice or after we’d just finished coaching baseball for the middle school he always was working with me. Thanks partly to the efforts by him and the other EHS baseball coaches I have become the player, student and person I am today. As a coach, I also believe in the value of hard work, it’s sad to see players who could be good just be lazy and seeing the failure of people with great talent but no work ethic, is an eye opening experience, and it inspires me to work hard to not end up in the same…

An experience that has significantly transformed me into the person I am today are the beginning years of my cheer “career.” The first three years were the most difficult that i have faced throughout the nine years I have cheered in total. I was not the most athletic, skinniest, or skillful cheerleader there can be. Also since i was new to the cheer world, as all cheerleaders call it, I didn't have as many friends. As time went on I slowly started to get the hang of things and what went on with this new sport. My coaches always punished me in everything I did. I had to prove myself to everyone that I can be just like them and nothing less.…

Though I had experienced several activities throughout the first ten years of my life, I had not selected the activities in which I participated. My parents were the ones who, up to that point, suggested different recreational pursuits. They recommended I play soccer, and when the season ended and I decided not to rejoin, my parents thought tennis may be more enjoyable. I took part in tennis and Girl Scouts for four years, but I did not wish to pursue them beyond that. Even though I enjoyed doing the activities my parents chose for me, and I learned principled lessons from them, I had not had the opportunity to choose something for myself. That changed one cold, dark Wednesday in the middle of winter at my religious education class. The director of the…

Swimming has been recorded since prehistoric times; the earliest recording of swimming dates back to Stone Age paintings from around 7,000 years ago. Written references date from 2000 BCE. Some of the earliest references to swimming include the Gilgamesh, the Iliad, the Odyssey, the Bible, Beowulf, and other sagas. In 1578, Nikolaus Wynmann, a German professor of languages, wrote the first swimming book, The Swimmer or A Dialogue on the Art of Swimming (Der Schwimmer oder ein Zwiegespräch über die Schwimmkunst). Competitive swimming in Europe started around 1800, mostly using breaststroke. In 1873, John Arthur Trudgen introduced the trudgen to Western swimming competitions, after copying the front crawl used by Native Americans. Due to a British dislike of splashing, Trudgen employed a scissor kick instead of the front crawl 's flutter kick. Swimming was part of the first modern Olympic games in 1896 in Athens. In 1902 Richmond Cavill introduced the front crawl to the Western world. In 1908, the world swimming association, Fédération Internationale de Natation (FINA), was formed. Butterfly was developed in the 1930s and was at first a variant of breaststroke, until it was accepted as a separate style in 1952.…
