High School Theatre Observation
OPRF high school is brimming with diverse cliques, groups, and clubs. But one particular cohort seems to stand out from the rest. The theatre department, overseen by Michelle Bayer, can be described as a whirlwind of activity, with 10 official productions each year. My group researched it for the education unit, but the majority of them were unfamiliar with the activity, and I felt the overall presentation was unrepresentative of what high school theatre is. It can be characterized, primarily, by an abundance of drama, both in the acting sense, and in the social sense. Theatre kids are infamous for their diva-like attitudes, and occasional entitlement. I had the opportunity to observe these behaviors up close and personal with my shows I participated in this year.

I started theatre in sixth grade, when I was in the ensemble of the Music Man at CAST Summer. From there, I gradually became more interested and I started auditioning for every play season. When I got to OPRF, the stakes exponentially grew. We had kids coming in from BRAVO, Ovation academy, all highly prestigious youth theaters in Oak Park. Acting became less of a pastime for me and more a defining way of life at OPRF. This year, I was lucky enough to get cast in a play, a feat I told myself I could never accomplish.

Within a cast, there were subgroups. Those groups were usually composed of people in the same year and people who had the same attitude regarding the play we were in. For example, a clique within Radium Girls contained several sophomores who did not enjoy being in the play. This was I suppose, partly due to the fact that they were disrespected by a senior castmate who complained about them behind their backs frequently. These subgroups directly contribute to the divide between the cast, which in turn leads to the typical drama and gossip one thinks of when they hear about high school

I am inspired by those that act because the actors are challenging themselves and playing a role that they had most likely never played before. As the audience, I am absorbed into the characters’ world and how the little mannerisms of each character complete the play as a whole. I am an absolute fanatic for theatrical performances, whether it be a play, musical, or dance. I think that performers have to express themselves effortlessly, unbeknownst to the audience. By experiencing it firsthand through pit orchestra, I was fully able to appreciate how much time was put into the preparation of of a performance. As a student at Wellesley, I will be frequenting the musicals and plays performed by the theater because the fine arts is what fuels my imagination. Also through participating in pit, I learned that many, many hours are put into creating a fantastic, emotion-wrought performance. It is not just the actors that create the atmosphere, it is also the musicians. Along with the actors and possibly the music, there are more people that put the time into making the play “perfect”, something that the audience usually does not know or does not see. For this reason, I am very excited to learn that there is a theater (aka a place to watch plays/musicals/perform as a pit member) because whether I…

On July 11, 2016, I presented a booktalk to a group of ten female teens that are a part of the teen theatre group, the Saax Bradbury Players. The booktalk was hosted by an employee of the theatre, Jen Blalock. Because of rehearsals taking place in the theatre, the booktalk was given in the host’s home. The grades of the students range from rising sophomores to 2016 graduates. The ethnicity of the student group is ninety percent White and ten percent African American. The main interest of this student group is drama. Most of their time is spent in rehearsing and performing in children’s, young adult, and adult theatrical productions. These teens are truly diverse in the groups in which they relate. Their ages…

Elora is a natural performer so, when she was cast in her first production with the SAHS Drama program, it was not a surprise that she would do very well. The practice schedule for members of the South Aiken High School Drama Club can be quite rigorous; however, Elora proved to be the perfect cast member right from the start. She is passionate about theater, so it is a natural environment for her. South Aiken’s Drama Club is an intense experience, because students are in full control of the production. As such, they build sets, find and create costumes, cast the production, and bond into an ensemble unit to create a unified illusion on the stage. Our students…

In theaters in Shakespear's time the audience would be playing cards, smoking, or eating or drinking something. In our time we come to the play, we might have some candy hidden in our purse, besides that we come watch the play and have common courtesy. In the article by Douglas A. Burger he said " We don't yell insults at the actors, spit or toss orange peels on the ground." I think that is interesting that the audiences used to be disrespectful to the actors on the stage. If anyone were to do that now they would most likely get…

Audition week. The second most nerve wracking experience a theatre kid has to go through. You’re all alone on a blank stage staring at a panel of directors making a choice about the next three months of your high school experience. Although it may be scary, the directors are just your biggest fans. They want to see you succeed, and that is what everyone who walked in and faced the directors did! They are all incredibly proud of everybody who auditioned, but sadly they could not take all 70 people into the next step, callbacks. 40 people all fighting for about 7 leads is the most stressful event I can imagine.…

Actors are opening themselves up to be completely and utterly vulnerable for a crowd of people to watch. They are letting strangers by the hundreds view them at their weakest moments, and then forcing themselves to wipe away the tears and take a bow. They are connecting to a story with emotions that are so overwhelming, they have to sing about it, and when those emotions intensify even further, they have to dance about it, too. Everything about the theatre is just so stunningly relatable for those onstage and off, I have a hard time imagining how different my life would have been if I had never been a part of…

I am involved with stage crew in my Theater Company and this teaches me how to apply myself and my knowledge into work to create something amazing. I love seeing a play start from auditions to the last show-night. Opportunities to collaborate with other students and teachers and comparing ideas until a solution to a problem is solved or until a beautiful set is designed is a largely unique aspect that theater allows me. It wasn’t until opening night when I realized that theatre was something I wanted to pursue for the rest of my life. I remember the exact moment. I had just gotten done delivering my monologue to a full house. I could feel the stage lights beating down on my face and the cold front from the air conditioning system make the hairs on my arms stand straight up. I looked out into the audience and saw a little old lady sitting a few rows from the stage smiling from ear to ear and then I realized the entire audience was smiling. Happiness filled the air. Happiness that I created. It was one of the best feelings in the world that not many get to have. I will forever cherish it. That is the reason why I came to the University of Northern Iowa to pursue theatre so I can continue to make people happy with my craft on a professional level. I am hoping as I continue with this course that I am able to grow as an actor. I essentially want to be pushed out of my comfort zone and experience the parts of the theatre world I wouldn’t have dared tried in high school. I also want to gain better stage presence and learn how to control some of my nervous tics I do while…
