Throughout Medieval times, the Catholic Church had a fear mongering power over the people that God was always watching everyone, and he had control over whether you went to Heaven or Hell. This incentivised people into sticking to strict Catholic rules to appease God, in
hopes he would reward them and they could go to Heaven. God was considered a higher force, and the desire not to go to Heaven or Hell was a lower urge. Whilst people believed in Catholicism wholly, pagan mythology from the Greeks and Romans could also be used to explain how the world worked, with interactions between the Gods and the people occurring.
