2014 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards Essay My name is Emily Berger and I’m a high school senior that will be attending college in the fall of 2014. I have chosen to pursue a career in the field of physical therapy because of my experience with a volunteer position. This past summer I volunteered in the Advanced Physical Therapy Clinic at Dr. Manoogian and Dr. Guru’s office in Mount Dora, Florida to make sure physical therapy was the field for me. I did not want to worry about wasting a lot of money towards a college degree if it wasn’t a career I could see myself enjoying for the rest of my life. My mom inspired me to do my volunteer work. We both agreed that it would be a good idea to get experience in the physical therapy field before I go to college. We made a phone call to the office and they said it would be a pleasure to have a volunteer in the clinic. The week that school got out for the year of 2013, I began to work in the clinic right away. I am grateful to my mom for motivating me to step out of my comfort zone and try something new because I have discovered great things along the way. A lot of effort was required to do my volunteer work. The clinic is very busy so I always have to be on my feet. I volunteered from 8AM-5PM, Monday through Friday. The mornings mainly consisted of filing away the therapist’s notes into the patient’s files. After the filing was done, I would “shadow” behind the therapists and assist them with various tasks. I retrieved hot and cold packs for patients by retrieving them out of the clinic’s back room and putting them on the patient’s injuries, then returning the packs once the timers went off. I cleaned the beds once the patients were finished with treatment by spraying them with a disinfecting cleaner and wiping them down to keep the area hygienic. I showed patients how to perform their basic exercises to improve better ranges of motion for whatever condition they had by doing it with them. For example,

My ultimate goal is to become an Ultrasound Technician and to eventually get a degree in another related health career. I plan on attending Oregon Institute of technology, since it’s the only school in my state that offers this. If I have the power to gain more knowledge, then I will pursue this broader perspective even if this means becoming a Nurse or a Medical assistant, I will work hard to give back to my community. My dad had gotten very sick. The doctors found a tumor in his large intestine. Hearing that, I felt like my whole life crashed before my eyes. My dad was such a good man that sometimes I thought why something so bad, would happen to such a good person. Doctors told him he needs surgery immediately, so dad had no other choice. He went into surgery and my mom and I were there by his side the whole time. Dad needed to stay in the hospital for a full week after surgery so we each took turns staying with him. I would come from school and go to dad, and mom would leave to work. We would take turns. This hardship was difficult for me to bare. My dad didn’t really speak any good English yet at that time, so I had to be there for him and translate everything. I knew I had to help him out. Hospital days were long. I remember sitting in a chair near my dad’s hospital bed and seeing all the nurses come in and out of his room. They were all so sweet and caring. They were all trying their best to get my dad to heal faster and get better. I remember sitting there and thinking to myself, how exhilarating it is to work as a nurse and make a difference in someone’s life every single day. From that day on, I have always wanted to become a nurse. I decided that I was going to study nursing so that I would be able to make a difference in people’s lives one day. Ever since I was a little girl, I have always enjoyed helping people. Whether it was helping my classmates with homework, helping my mom around the house, or helping my dad with translating. I always did it from the heart. I truly think that serving others is my passion and my calling in life. I went to my counselor in high school and told her that I wanted to do running start. She gladly signed me up for it. I did it for two years by taking prerequisites for the nursing program at Everett Community…

I volunteered at Stephens School here in town. I chose this place because I love kids and I was willing to sacrifice some time to help my community and others. I had a lot of fun working with my friend Ana. My experience in helping Mrs. Burcham was very fun. I completed twenty hours. I really enjoyed helping her in cutting laminated papers, which taught me some patients, because we cut a lot of them. The most challenging part was being able to keep up with all the assignments that she would give us. When we did not have enough time to finish our work in Mrs. Burcham’s classroom, then she would give us papers to take home because there was so many. It usually took me around four to five hours to finish cutting all the papers she wanted us to cut for her. When she would give us homework for the day I would try my best to finish it, and turn it in as soon as possible. She…
