Hills Like White Elephants
In Ernest Hemingway’s short story “Hills Like White Elephants”, the narrator presents a brief description about the scene including the location, specific details and one of the character that is called the girl. This short story is about a girl that is trying to make a decision about an abortion and how she is manipulated by another character called the American to get this done. In this story the narrator let us know throw symbols which are the feelings of the girl when she think about this decision, and how innocent is the girl. The story is made with critical thinking, the narrator use a convincing tone that let the reader know that something is going to happens since beginning of the story. It can be seen when the narrator introduces the story by saying, “the station was between two lines of rails on the sun.” In real life it can just be a mode of transportation, but in literature it has a different meaning. In this case the narrator present the rail way to let us know that the girl is has to be made a decision, but she has two options. However as the story keep going the girl and the American were in a bar drinking some alcohol and the narrator introduces what was happening at the bar and how the room look like.
The narrator also presents throw another symbol what are the character’s feeling at the moment. “The girl was looking off at the line of hills. They wee white in the sun and the country was brow and dry.” “They look like white elephant, she said.” In literary concept a white elegant means a baby and it has a positive and a negative meaning. A white elephant is consider as purity, courage, strength, peace, power, and a long lifespan. In the other hand it also means obstacle that are going to be in the middle in your future, unnecessary, and no usefulness. Each character is identify by the positives and the negative connotations for example, the girl wants the baby and she is the one that notice the white elephant in the room with a happy tone, but the American is just drinking and he express that negative side on his feeling because he does not want the
baby. The last symbol that take a place in the story is a landscape that appear on page 477. It is when the girl is going to get throw the abortion and the American in some way feel guilty.
“The girl stood up and walked to the end of the station. Across, on the other side, were fields of grain and trees along the banks of the Ebro. Far away beyond the river, were mountains. The shadow of a cloud moved across the field of grain and she saw the river through the trees.”
The American is trying to play a game trying to convince the girl that he wants the baby when it is not true. The girl is sad but throw the landscape the narrator turn it into a positive side.
