This scream shows the pain and agony of a black man. During this Kendrick recite, “While my love ones was fighting a continuous war back in the city, I was entering a new one, a war that was based on apartheid and discrimination.” Here Lamar clearly opposing the racial inequality and the discrimination faced by the black community. To support his thesis, the most impactful scene of his video shows a black man being slammed to the ground manhandled by white police officer. The man pushes the officer and makes a run for it. The officer without hesitation pulls his gun and shoot the black man. It looks horrifyingly realistic. That’s the ‘war’, Lamar is refering to; blue versus black. Further he says, “But homicide be lookin’ at you from the face down What Mac-11 even boom with the bass down”. He is referring homicide to the merciless killings of the black people by the police. He uses ‘Alright’ mantra in an optimistic way and thus this song is known as ‘Black Anthem’ too. Even in the end of the video, he was shot by a white police officer. His body spills blood and he hits the ground. But there was a smile on his face. This symbolizes that on this path to change there will be lot of struggle and casualties. Still we have a painful and thorny road ahead, but we have to walk with joy and belief that things will be better in future. That we will be alright.
