On May 4-7 1864, the first battle of General Ulysses S. Grant’s “Virginia Overland Campaign” against the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia, and their general Robert E. Lee took place. The Battle of the Wilderness was the first step towards capturing the Confederate capital of Richmond. It began with a meeting between President Abraham Lincoln and Union leader Ulysses S. Grant to discuss war tactics. The goal was to battle Robert E. Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia and keep it under pressure to defend the capital, making it impossible for Lee to send more soldiers to defend against the Union advance into Georgia. The Army of the Potomac and the Independent Ninth Corps, numbering approximately 120,000 men, left their camps in Culpeper County…
Sam Houston died.Margaret gently removed a ring from the pinkie on her husband’s left hand. His mother,Elizabeth Paxton Houston, had given her son the ring when he had joined the U.S. Army during the War of 1812. Sam’s father had been an officer during the Revolutionary War, and the prospects of soldiering had also seemed better to Sam than teaching school in Maryville, Tenn. But in March 1813 Houston had been only 20 years old and required his mother’s consent—his father having died in 1806—to enlist. She had granted her permission, slipped the ring onto his finger and, if family lore is true, even gave him a musket. It was fitting Houston wore that ring until his death. The thin gold band had defined his…
Cornelius Vanderbilt was one of America’s leading Business tycoons in the early 18th century. Many believed his genius and success as a businessman was contributed to his ability to seize upon opportunities that appeared unexpectedly. Some even thought that because Vanderbilt was so successful, he had planned everything in advance. Born poor , Vanderbilt had used his obvious aptitude for business, and luck to amass his empire, involving himself in the steam engine, both on land and sea. He tried and succeeded in connecting the railway to create a very large monopoly over the railroad system during his lifetime. Being involved in transportation, this was very important because transportation was the most important and lucrative business…
The presence and role of President Davis is somewhat questionable. Two out the three accounts places President Davis in Capitol Square, however, in Sallie Putnam the President is not mentioned. The absence of President Davis in Sallie Putnam’s book is very noticeable. Putnam’s omission of President Davis raised numerous questions. One would think that the presence of the President would be worth noting. So why did she not write that Davis was there? Did she not personally like Davis? But, in reexamining both Varina Davis and John Jones’ retellings of the Richmond bread riot, I discovered that both authors may have written biased accounts. In Jones’ A Rebel War Clerk’s Diary, he wrote that “I did not follow, to see what they did” but he learned about the incident an hour later. Since Jones was not…

Charles Sherman, William’s father, was a great lawyer and a Supreme Court Justice of the state. When he was nine, William’s father died abruptly, leaving the family with little to no money. After his father’s death, William was raised by Thomas Ewing. Thomas Ewing was a successful and well known Ohioan Senator, who was also prominent in the Whig party. Although there have been different opinions about the origin and choice of William’s middle name, it is believed that he was named after a Shawnee chief who his father praised. In 1836, Thomas Ewing gave William an opportunity to go to Army West Point, which William accepted. While at West Point, William shined in the classroom,…

A. Phillip Randolph was known as a radical journalist, a labor leader, and a pioneer of civil rights. His mission was to unite blacks against the discrimination which shut them out of well paying jobs in the factories. Many whites and blacks knocked his efforts in the beginning but as time went by people started supporting his message. All over the United States committees of black people were forming to protest in the march on Washington. A lot of people tried to persuade Randolph not to do it but he insisted that it needed to be done. Finally recognizing that he could not be swayed, President Roosevelt signed an order to end the discrimination on plant jobs. This was the beginning of fair employment. Randolph started getting recognized as the most dangerous black man in America because he made someone so powerful do something he really did not want to along with another President by the name of Harry Truman. Randolph’s persuasiveness allowed Truman to sign an order commanding that there will be an end to…
