Portuguese Navigation: Because china did not feel the need for overseas expansion and the gov’t ended support for long distance maritime expeditions; it feel to Portuguese to take advantage of new techniques of sailing & navigation to begin exploring the Atlantic.
Vasquez De Coronado: A Spanish ruler, explorer and conquistador. He was the first European to explore North America's Southwest. Explored much of the interior of the continent reaching as far as the Great Plains, and became the first European to encounter the immense herds of buffalo that roamed the west.
Queen Isabella of Spain: Married to King Ferdinand, their marriage united the warring kingdoms. –Result of the completion of their Reconquista they forced people to change their religion or leave the country. Also they became sponsors of Columbus’ voyage.
Amerigo Vespucci: The real explorer who found the westward route to Asia. He realized that the native inhabitants were distinct peoples, not residents of the East Indies as Columbus believed.
Hernan Cortes: The first explorer to encounter a major American civilization, in 1519 he arrived at Tenochtitlan, the nerve center of the Aztec empire, whose wealth and power rested on domination of numerous subordinate peoples nearby. The Aztecs were violent people but with a few hundred European men with him he was able to conquer the Aztec city by relying on superior military technology and the smallpox epidemic.
Smallpox: A disease that devastated the Aztec society and many others; A highly contagious viral disease characterized by fever and weakness and skin eruption with pustules that form scabs that slough off leaving scars.
French - Indian relations in New France:
Dutch West India Company: Less powerful than Dutch E. India Company; maintained profitable enterprises in Caribbean. At times, less interested in trading than in raiding. Dissolved in French Invasion of Dutch republic in 1794.
