“The only way to deal with an unfree world is to become so absolutely free that your very existence is an act of rebellion.” (“Albert Camus Quotes”) Albert Camus famously quoted this to state that to be truly free from an unfair place, you must be so free that doing anything will be a rebellious act against the government. Dave Barry is a Pulitzer Prize-winning humorist whose syndicated column appears in more than 500 newspapers. Barry’s published works, totaling more than 25, include ‘Stay Fit and Healthy until You’re Dead’ (1985), ‘Dave Barry Hits Below the Beltway’ (2001), and ‘Dave Barry’s Complete Guide to Guys: A Fairly Short Book’ (1995). The preface to Barry’s book ‘Dave Barry’s Complete Guide to Guys: A Fairly Short Book’, ‘Guys vs. Men’, is his perspective on the difference between “Guys” and “Men.” While both words no doubt bring to mind an image of a human male, they are very different in there description of that male. First, guys like to buy “neat” things that they don’t really need. Also, guys like a really pointless challenge. Last, but not least, guys are not very good at communicating their intimate feelings.…

Sacrifice is giving up something for the greater good, even if it might not benefit the individual. When someone sacrifices something they do not think twice about it, they just do it without hesitation, even if they risk their life. There are many different types of sacrifice, it could be something as simple as someone giving up their seat on an airplane and giving it someone who might have had a bad day, or it could be much more difficult and making the decision to sacrifice their life to save someone else's. Only the word “we” is used, even to describe oneself. The state considers individuality unreal. No person is unique or outstanding, as human beings are indistinguishable parts of a greater whole. The characters are nameless and are only known by a word followed by a number. Also, all decisions are made by Scholars and Councils. One of the greater crimes you can commit is being alone, which equality 7-252 breaks countless times. When he discovers a tunnel from the Unmentionable times, he goes there alone to do science experiments, but it is well worth it because he learned more information in two years by himself than all the scholars have in ten years. Eventually, Equality 7-2521 admits he is evil because he is the only person doing something for his own benefit and no one else’s. When Equality 7-2521 says "My happiness needs no higher aim to vindicate it. My happiness is not the means to any end. It is the end It is its own goal. It is its own purpose.”, he starts to wholly understand his importance and role as an individual and ultimately learns the word “I.” In Anthem, every person who belongs to the community is required to live and work for the soul purpose of the "great WE," which can be interpreted as the fellowship of all men. For example, when Equality 7-2521 presented the light bulb to the World Council of Scholars, they responded by wanted to destroy it and saying “what is not thought by all men cannot be…

In the book, everyone is given the same treatment and thinks of every man as his brother. Everyone has to agree with ideas before they can become laws or everyday items. Equality is banished for creating a mechanism that he didn’t inform his brothers about. Due to this, he leaves the land and travels into the unknown areas past the city limits. It is here that he discovers what freedom truly is and is summed up perfectly with this quotation by the narrator, “To be free, a man must be free from his brothers” (Pg. 53).…
