“Social workers help people deal with problems ranging from personal relationships to lack of resources to blatant discrimination” (Kirst-Ashman & Hull, 2009, p. 29). Using the scenario involving Soledad and her family I will conduct a theoretical application to her culturally sensitive situation. I will complete this application by conducting a self reflection including my awareness of the situation as well as the sensitive issues, and my values and beliefs that may challenged by this case. I will also discuss the systems and ecological theories and how they are illustrated in the case. This will be followed by my empowerment approach and client engagement.…
Hispanic Cultural Assessment Anitra Wilson Nursing 542 May 31, 2015 Professor Sandra Brown Hispanic Culture The Hispanic/Latino culture is a culture that traces their roots to Spain, Mexico, and the Spanish-speaking nations of Central America, South America and the Caribbean. The Latino culture within the United States is growing rapidly. …
This builds up the chances for poorer Hispanic families to send their children to colleges, enabling them a high quality education and getting them closer to the average American’s society education level. Only time will tell whether these promises towards the Hispanic population will be held and are sufficient to fully integrate them into the society.…
I now understand that following the National Association of Social Workers’ Code of Ethics, in terms of multicultural competence, means that as social workers we must seek to have a working knowledge of the world and people around us. We as clinicians must strive to understand clients’ culture, engage in dialogue about social diversity and oppression, and incorporate all this information into service. Cultural competence in the frame of ethics calls clinicians to have a working knowledge of diverse backgrounds while also allowing the clients knowledge of their personal experience to guide your interventions and interactions with them as individuals. Cultural competence in policy and practice also calls social workers to seek to understand the ways that oppression and power affect diverse…
The different theories would be used in an effort to identify the areas of concern, and then the chosen theory is used to create an effective objective for the client. When asked, the student interviewed explained that he was not familiar with many of the different theories prior to taking the course. With this statement, the interviewer asked the student what theories discussed during the course would he use to enhance his cultural sensitivity when working with Hispanic and Latino clients. He immediately explained his new appreciation for the Strength Perspective and explained how he as a social worker often focused on the lack of resources that many Latino and Hispanic clients have, and when reading about this theory he realized the importance to focus on the strengths. As cited by Wilson (2006), the Strengths Perspective theory was originally developed in the University of Kansas School of Social Work, and has been continuously developed as the theory is used with various groups. The theory emerged as a response to the idea that social workers were focusing on the problem of their clients, rather than the possibility and strengths. It is with this understanding the interviewed student explained he will now assist those who are in this…
First, I have learned that the cultural awareness of the caregivers is very important because it prevents misunderstandings while dealing with the Hispanic patients. I have realized that caregivers should be aware that the Hispanics value relationships and may, therefore, invade their interpersonal space. The caregiver should be open when associating with them since considering such would promote the creation of healing environment to them through the realization of their needs. The social culture of the Hispanics is unique and provides vital insight on how to associate with them especially as a social worker. I have learned that each member of the family unit is assigned roles that determine how they relate to other family members. This gives me the impression that caregivers should particularly be careful when associating with elder clients. They must treat them with utmost respect and…

In addition to this, this essay will discuss the importance for social workers to have a clear understanding that “discrimination is the process (or a set of processes) that leads to oppression” and that in order “To challenge oppression, it is therefore necessary to challenge discrimination.” (Thompson 2001) This essay will draw attention to the importance of this understanding as within social work practice there is a danger that social workers could reinforce the oppression and discrimination against their service user, “ There is no middle ground: intervention either adds to oppression (or at least condones it) or goes some small way towards easing or breaking such oppression.” (Thompson 1992)…
Providing mental health services that are both effective and culturally competent for Latino/a American clients has proved to be challenging. Understanding these challenges requires considering the issue from both a systematic level and from an individual level. At the systematic level, services for Latino/a American clients are affected by a lack of culturally competent clinicians as well as a lack of culturally sensitive assessment tools and interventions (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2001). At the individual level, there are a myriad of socio-cultural factors that warrant consideration such as limited financial resources, the fear of being stigmatized, or the general lack of awareness regarding mental health issues and services, to name a few (Vega et al., 2007; Vega & Lopez, 2001). These systematic and individual factors demonstrate the need to address these disparities in Latino/a American mental health services.…

The U.S. Census Bureau defines Hispanic as "a person of Cuban, Mexican, Puerto Rican, South or Central American, or other Spanish culture or origin regardless of race". The term Hispanic is a blanket term to cover large very different cultures that have little in common. In the United States, the Hispanic culture ranks individuals against each other to show how connected they are to their origins.…
I agree with your post that the Hispanic patient values the family unit. The oldest male does have the power in the family and control’s the decision making (Carteret, 2011). My husband is Hispanic and is the male in his family that makes all the decisions. I grew up with no father or male influence in my life. Personally, it has taken an adjustment for this line of thinking for myself, but I have pointed out to my husband that he is living in America now and he could adopt American ways. In my nursing career, as in my personal life, I have found that it is not effective to try to change cultural views of another, but to work with them and incorporate their cultural views in making decisions. Normally, a patient in America will talk…
Social Workers value the maximum feasible self – determination, empowerment, and enhancing strengths to increase the client’s voice in decision making. ‘The Educational Policy and Accreditation Standards (EAPS) affirm the commitment of social programs to the core values of the profession: service, social justice, dignity, and worth of the person, importance of human relationships, integrity, competence, human rights, and scientific inquiry’ (NASW, 2008 A; CSWE, 2008; as per Hepworth, Glenda and Kim, 2010). Social Workers demonstrate respect for and acceptance of the unique characteristics of ‘diverse populations that are characterized by great diversity, including the intersection of dimensions such as age, class, culture, disability, ethnicity, gender, identity and expression, immigration status, political ideology, race, religion, sex, and sexual orientation, religion, physical or mental ability, age, and national origin’ (CSWE, 2008; as per Hepworth, Glenda, and Kim,…
