The author’s Kristin E. VanderEnde , Kathryn M. Yount, Michelle M. Dynes, and Lynn M. Sibley’s, peer-reviewed intimate partner article, Community-level correlates of intimate partner violence against women globally: A systematic review” (2012); the empirical studies meta-analysis suggests a basis correlate of intimate partner violence to attributes of social and economics relative to community. For example, in Haiti, one study examination includes women who have a significant other with the use of excessive alcohol, and lives in a community with a prevalence of male high unemployment. Additionally, the women whose significant others who control decision in finances and reside in an area of high male unemployment experience a reduction of sexual…
In chapter 5 in the book “African American Families” written by Angela Hattery and Earl Smith, the authors examined different ways in which intimate partner violence is shaped by other social problems, such as employment, incarceration and health. Hattery and Smith went as far as, interviewing different couples, and examining the similarities and differences between race and ethnicity. In this chapter, Hattery and Smith broke down the different factors and triggers that cause intimate partner violence to occur. The authors make it very clear that there is no specific description of batterer; meaning that, a batterer can be male or female and not just one particular race. According to Hattery and Smith, men who were victims of psychical child abuse are twice as likely to batterer in adulthood, and if intimate partner violence took place in a household, most likely the child will develop that bad habit and repeat what they see. Men feel that a part of their masculinity traits is to be the breadwinners, and the head of the household. Therefore, when they feel that their masculinity is being threatened, they react in a way such as being abusive to their significant other because it makes them feel “in control” and having “power.”…
According to Payne and Wermeling’s research, many victims remain in abusive relationships to avoid retaliation towards them or their children and revictimization of victims occurs at rates as high as 32% within 6 months of the first case of domestic violence (Payne & Wermeling, 2009). Some victims even try to work things out with their attackers by meeting their demands or simply trying to talk out their “problems”, which can lead to further abuse. “The most common reasons for not reporting domestic violence to police are that victims view the incident as a personal or private matter, they fear retaliation from their abuser, and they do not believe that police will do anything about the incident,” according to the Feminist Majority Foundation’s research (FMF,…
Each year Latinos make the big journey to the United States. They usually settle for the first low paying jobs, which are offered to them resulting in not moving up the corporate ladder. This consequently results in a pattern of never seeking mobility. The second generations that are born here, either follow their parent’s footsteps or seek for better opportunities through education in order to get their families out of the poverty. Most Latino families today, face the burden about money being the strongest economical issue. The children take account of all the hardships their parents face and are forced to contribute to the families economic crisis. It is hard for the children to move forward since they feel the pressure to give back to their families and decide to work straight after high school, instead of pursuing a career. Since the parents are worried about keeping food on the table; instead of their children’s education the children do not realize how important education is and end up dropping out. All the free time that they have in their hands leads them into joining gangs, doing drugs or having a baby at a young age.…
Garcia worked with both President John Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson closely. With the Kennedy race on and their poll taxes paid by the American GI Forum, Mexican Americans had become prominent in helping Kennedy be elected. The Viva Kennedy campaign was a big hit, inspiring many Mexicans to use their voting privileges to make a difference in society. As a trusted advisor, Dr. “Garcia was appointed by Kennedy to negotiate a mutual defense and aid agreement with the federation of West Indies Islands” (Ramos 88). His opinion held power and because of that, the president sought past the colored tags and chose Garcia for his courage and selflessness. The sudden death of Kennedy destroyed the hope of equality for some individuals and brought a new…
Mexican Americans, Puerto Rican Americans, Cuban Americans, and Dominican Americans have separate cultures but both include strong family bonds and religious beliefs. These cultural groups are classified into the Hispanic American category because they share the Spanish language. “Although these groups share the same language each group has a different dialect and origin. Cuban and Dominican Americans have made the greatest developments in the social and political stand point. Puerto Rican Americans have made progress on the homeland in the economic view. While some groups resist assimilation into the American lifestyle, others have embraced it.” (Alba, 2006). Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, and Dominican Americans have many resemblances but still remain separate in their ethnicity and are descendants from a variety of immigrants. The main reason for these groups immigrating to the United States was for a safe environment free of political issues occurring in their countries and to seek a better way of life.…
403). Furthermore, these three factors are strenuous on families and could be a possible hindrance when trying to leave the abuse relationship. Especially with financial dependence, most victims of intimate partner violence are deprived of any money in their relationship, furthering their struggle to leave. By the same token, those who lack necessary social support or are isolated socially, experience higher risk of domestic violence in the Latino and African American cultures. When attempting or considering leaving a violent partner it is pertinent to have a solid support system that will assist in the process of ending the relationship (Hines, Malley-Morrison, & Dutton, 2013, p. 404). Those who lack this system are likely to experience greater difficulty. These factors, coupled with alcohol or substance abuse can create extremely unfavorable conditions under which a victim may attempt to leave their abuser (Hines, Malley-Morrison, & Dutton, 2013, p.…
Intimate partner violence is a macro level problem that affects people all over the world. The term intimate partner violence consists of five methods, physical, sexual, stalking, psychological and economic abuse among former, current couples and individuals that are often close to each other. When people talk about intimate partner violence, the first thing that the general populations visualize is women getting abused by their male partners. However, intimate partner violence does not discriminate social structures, gender, age or economic status. Both poor and rich males and females of all ages can be victims of intimate partner violence, yet society views intimate partner violence as something that affects only women. Intimate partner violence is something that, to this day, continues to grow and harm many individuals. We, as a community, should bring more awareness to…
Intervention is tough though. Some of these women do not seek the help. And it is tough to give them the help if they do not think they need it. This cannot be forced upon them. They will usually return to the situation. Even if it is for the sake of the children. But WEAVE is there to help. And when they are ready to seek another way of life without abuse WEAVE will be there. It is hard to believe in this day and age of social awareness that this continues to be an issue. According to the National Crime…

The truth is there are many reasons why people don’t leave an abusive relationship right away; one reason being is fear for their lives. For anyone who has suffered verbal abuse ‘behind closed doors’ the reality is painful. When someone abuses you in secret the abuser gives a false impression to others that the relationship is healthy, that you are happy, and okay. It also creates the illusion that you are the problem and not abuser because abusers have the ability to manipulate others into taking their side. The most obvious thing to do to prevent the abuser’s tactics from being effective is to leave permanently or to put as much distance as you possibly can between you and your abuser. This may be the only effective choice to put in place, whether it’s physical or verbal abuse. Many women have tried to escape abusive relationships, but are afraid of the possible consequences. This may be easy for women who have a strong family support system but many women have failed to find relief in these situations simply because they don’t have family support or adequate resources. My heart is often troubled after reading countless domestic violence cases where women have been severely beaten or even murdered by their partners. It really bothers me when these incidents take place right in front of the children. If you don’t have the courage to leave for yourself, please leave for the sake of your children. No child should ever have to watch their mother being abused or murdered in front of…
My grandparents risked their own lives by crossing the Mexico border to come to the United States. They wanted to give their five children a better life and education to follow their dreams. My grandparents decided it was probably the last opportunity that they would have to leave as a family so they took it. They all left with the things that only fit into one suitcase. They had to leave all their belongings and home behind but my grandparents knew it would be a good risk for a better life for their next generation. That's all the Latinos want is a better life and be able to help their loved ones in need. The inequities that the Latino community faces is discrimination and lack of Financial resources. Many Americans have hate towards immigrants…

Names are very important and when discussing the differences between racial or cultural, it is very important to remain culturally sensitive. Explaining the differences between Hispanics, Latino, Chicano, and Mexican American may give you a better understand of why some people choice what they want to be called. Because people should be able to choose how he or she is called and names disempowered can have serious repercussions.…
