In today’s goal driven society, cheating has become more prevalent among college students. These students first look for ways to cheat in secondary school and continue unethical practices in college. Some universities have implemented an honor code to hold students responsible for academic honesty. Researchers have investigated factors associated with college students and cheating that include personal and situational characteristics of this group of individuals, the influence of technological advances, and even influences from realms outside of academia. Many professionals in higher education argue that teaching students to behave in ethical ways and to develop core values that will influence lifelong decisions

For instance, students who engage in cheating, even once, are more likely to engage in cheating in the future, potentially putting them on a road to a life of dishonesty. Students who are dishonest in class are more likely to engage in fraud and theft on the job when they enter the workplace. Students are also negatively affected by academic dishonesty after graduation. A university diploma is an important document in the labor market. Potential employers use a degree as a representation of a graduate's knowledge and ability. However, due to academic dishonesty, not all graduates with the same grades actually did the same work or have the same skills. Thus, when faced with the fact that they do not know which graduates are skilled and which are not, employers must pay all graduates based on the quality of the average graduate. The more students who cheat, the lower the quality of the average graduate of a school, and thus the less employers are willing to pay a new hire from that school. Because of this reason, all students, even those that do not cheat themselves, are negatively affected by academic …show more content…
Cheating causes an underproduction of knowledge, where the professor's job is to produce knowledge. A case of cheating often will cause emotional distress to faculty members, many considering it to be a personal slight against them or a violation of their trust. Dealing with academic misconduct is often one of the worst parts of a career in education, one survey claiming that 77% of academics agreed with the statement "dealing with a cheating student is one of the most onerous aspects of the job."
Academic misconduct can also have an effect on a college's reputation, which is one of the most important assets of any school. An institution plagued by cheating scandals may become less attractive to potential donors and students and especially prospective employers. Alternatively, schools with low levels of academic dishonesty can use their reputation to attract students and employers.
Ultimately, academic dishonesty undermines the academic world. It interferes with the basic mission of education, the transfer of knowledge, by allowing students to get by without having to master the knowledge. Furthermore, academic dishonesty creates an atmosphere that is not conducive to the learning process, which affects honest students as well. When honest students see cheaters escape detection, it can discourage student morale, as they see the rewards for their work cheapened. Cheating also undermines academia when students steal

Cheaters that are simply trying to achieve their tragically high goals, and who have found that it has become unacceptable to drop a single ball that they are juggling whilst jumping through the flaming hoops of potential colleges. Wenke argues that students who would normally not be susceptible to evil are almost forced into cheating. This happens when they realize that the students who do cheat are typically more successful and have slightly higher test scores than those who don’t. Wenke closes by warning that these “smart” cheaters are going to be the same people who become heads of businesses and presidents of big corporations.     Post-secondary institutions are not easy, and they are not meant to be so. A large problem is that a lot of kids are pressured into going to college by their families, society, or their school. Not everybody is cut out for college, and it really just is not the right path in life for some people, which means that these “unfit” students are going to be more likely to cheat in order to satisfy themselves or anybody else. On the other hand, students that are completely prepared for college and maybe have done well their whole academic careers, still hold the possibility to break the honor code. Students are pushed within their own minds to cheat and share work so they do not have to try as hard, but still receive high grades. What they do not realize is that cheating really is not helping them in the long run. Of course, some students do have their time very well-managed, and can handle the stress, but others get stressed and break down very easily. College is known to have a rough transition from high school as far as the workload, increased pressure to do well, and the unfamiliar environment. These aspects of college can make it very stressful, and make some of the best students at least contemplate cheating, and breaking their institution’s honor code if there is one.     Can students be trusted not to cheat? More high schools, colleges, and universities are beginning to implement honor codes in their schools which, as the name implies, are sets of guidelines that are meant to constitute honorable behavior. These sets of rules do not condone acts of cheating, stealing, and plagiarizing with penalties upon violation. However, despite the establishment of an honor code, it is not guaranteed to work in all schools. Most students may not respond to having new sets of rules to follow or the punishment that comes along with not doing as such. The honor code should be revised in order to be more flexible with students as well as ensure their academic integrity. Honor codes should not enforce students to do more than what they should do just to show they understand the system, otherwise it would lose the appeal to the students and cause it to become meaningless.     An article by David Callahan discussed how honor codes reduce student cheating. First he mentioned how professors in college discover multiple students who plagiarize. Usually professors recognize language that is very sophisticated for a college writing level. Cheating is an ongoing problem on campuses with essays and exams. It was mentioned the University of Central Florida handled an ongoing “cheating scandal” on a mid-term that involved 200 students in 2011where as Universities having honor codes reported rare incidents of cheating. The article begins to compare Universities with honor codes to Universities without them. In 1993 there was a study done by Donald McCabe and Linda Trevino who researched the impacts of the honor code and discovered that there was less cheating in honor code environments. Then in 1999 they revisited the issue of the honor codes and why they are important. They discovered that “institutions with honor codes frame the issue of academic integrity in a fundamentally different way from students who do not have enforced honor codes.” (Callahan) Donald and his colleagues wrote that “students see themselves as a part of a moral community that offers significant trust and freedom which has specific rules and expectations which must enacted to preserve that trust and freedom” (Callahan) when a honor code is enforced.
