SECTION 1 THE GREAT WAR BEGINS
1. Europe had been at peace for 100 years
2. Europe leaders became worried about a region called the Balkans
3. Most people in the Balkans are Slavic
4. “Triple alliance” was formed to protect each other from attack

6) Russia- goes into the war to protect Slavic’s
7) USA – is involved to give money and aid for something in return
7. Germany was becoming an economic powerhouse in the early 1900’s
8. Militarism is on the rise, the building of a countries military for the glory of the nation. Militarism is the act of building a strong navy and army
9. Nationalism is on the rise, nationalism is when you have extreme pride for your country
10. European countries loved having a high status
11. Pan – Slavism means that all Slavic people should unite into one nation, and this made Russia the protector of all Slavic people
12. A new nation called Serbia wanted to create a new Slavic country
13. Austria hungry and the Ottomans feared a new Slavic country
14. ARCHDUKE FRANZ FERDINAND next in line to be emperor of Austria hungry
15. He is driving in a car and he is assassinated and this sparks WW1
16. Four reasons the war started 1- alliances 2 – militarism 3 – nationalism 4 – imperialism
17. Songs are instilled to make the country more proud and energetic for war and to win
