The Islamic Heartlands in the Middle and Late Abbasid Era
i. Abbasid Empire disintegrated between the ninth and thirteenth centuries. ii. Peasant revolts and slavery increased. iii. artistic and intellectual creativity age, the position of women eroded. iv. Signs of decline during the reign of Caliph al-Mahdi (775-785). failed to reconcile moderate Shi'a to Abbasid rule.
v. Al-Mahdi abandoned frugal ways and surrounded court with luxury, failed to establish a succession system resolving disputes among sons=problem to future rulers.
