History and memory does generate compelling and unexpected insights, and this is explicitly conveyed and explored in the Smithsonian website created by the American government, as well as in How to Tell a True War Story by Tim O’Brien. History is the compilation of events and peoples perspective in events, all meshed up into a montage to create a definitive account of events. Both texts demonstrate the fact that history and memory are directly linked, and memories of history are perceptions tainted an emotional aspect. Ultimately history and memory are conveyed as existing in an intrinsic relationship that compose both collective and individual experiences.

The Smithsonian website created by the American government shows a compelling selection of objects, images and personal stories from the events of September 11 for the public to view at any time on the internet. The Smithsonian website was designed to show the American perspective and what the Americans think happened on the day of September 11. The images and objects are considered to be the indisputable facts, whereas the personal stories are written by individual people that have memories of the events that took place on that day. These memories can be very biased depending on the individual self, religion or culture. This bias recount of an individual’s memory of the event is published and considered to be factual history. Memory can affect history and change the way it is perceived by other people which is distortion of the truth. An example of this is “when the public institution of the Australian War Memorial tries to outline its perspectives they incorporate political baggage”. This is because the government shows what it wants to the public, this is “the message they want to promote”. Consequently the content of this website is left of centre and unseen to most viewers, giving the audience a compelling and unexpected insight into the event that was

    History, and the representation of the past in any form is almost always controversial and political. For the 9/11 Memorial Museum, remembering and commemorating 9/11 is political because of the vast array of parties that have some stake in the tragedy. Due to the web of viewpoints, a Museum Memorial, in theory, as Williams theorized, “provide a public forum for discussion” (p. 233). The 9/11 Memorial Museum, perhaps in an effort to appear above the politics, made little to no mention of the global aftermath to the attacks and such changes in the U.S like the creation of the Department of Homeland Security.     Mark Raphael Baker’s novel is a combination of fiction and non-fiction which is brilliantly used to express history and culture and what can be achieved when history and memory are fused together to create an impression of the past and its connection with the present in a unique and evocative way. Baker takes us on a journey through the history of his parents as holocaust survivors, casting light on their memories hidden by pain and despair and through the process takes his own journey of self discovery. Baker’s occupation as a historian helps verify the memories and accounts of his parents; Baker uses techniques such as official documents like birth and death certificates, letters, archival documents as well as oral recordings of the memories of his parents as holocaust survivors. Baker’s use of fiction adds to the novel in a new way and helps us remember those whose stories can’t be told; he does this through imagery and evokes empathy from the readers. The 2002 film Rabbit Proof Fence, directed by Philip Noyce is based on three young half cast girl’s journey from Moore River native settlement camp 2400km back to their home in Jigalong the film portrays the true events of Molly Craig, Gracie Field and Daisy Craig Kadibill and the history of stolen generation in 1931 and the men and women behind it. The film shows the history and memories of both the aboriginals and the settlers in charge of Moore River native settlement camp. This allows us to see the perspective of all members. Noyce use techniques such as long shots and extremely close ups to create connections allowing the viewers to emphasise with the loss the aboriginals experienced. The Fiftieth Gate and Rabbit Proof Fence both show culture by speaking in their own unique native tongue this creates awareness to the audience of the history of that particular group.…

    In order to truely understand the past we must combine our knowledge of documented evidence with the memories and personal experiences that fill the gaps of history. History can be seen as a view of the past, however there will always be different perspectives and interpretations of any one event. Whereas memory is the motion of recognizing previous experiences and traumatic experiences which is often very subjective. This contrasting of both acknowledges that memory brings life and colour to history and in so doing offers us a more complete, valuable and more realistic representation of the past.
