History in the 80s
Describe entertainment and music from the 80s:

The 80s had a very distinct personality to its pop culture phenomena. It was in the 80s that we saw the first mass explosion of hysteria for new toys, with the 1983 winter shortage of Cabbage Patch Dolls. One of the biggest pop culture crazes of its times, the individually named and crafted Cabbage Patch Dolls join the ranks of the dolls of each decade, reflecting the eternal power of the doll.

Trivial Pursuit, a response to a few decades of mass information and the development of world wide pop culture, also appeared in 1983 and remains today as an after dinner favorite to show off all that Jeopardy worthy information you keep locked away.

Flash forward a few years, and the electronic toy age kicks into gear with the introduction of hundreds of new toys that could talk, move about and imitate favorite cartoon characters.

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles hit it big at the end of the decade, unleashing a blitzkrieg of marketing on the nation, and other 80s favorites followed with shows like Transformers or He-Man. The “action figure” craze started by GI Joes in the 60s exploded.

Soon, Nintendo kicked off the home video game console era (after a failed start by Atari) and toys were not only complex, but incredibly expensive.

I always heard stories from my dad about how great the 1970s and1980s were but I never could grasp what was so great about it. After interviewing my father about what made the 1980s unique, special, and different, I was really able to make a connection of how identical his description was to the one that took place in Ready Player One. After comparing the similarities between the two, I was also able to make the connection of how different everything is today compared to the lifestyle back in the 1980s.…

At the start of the 1980s Britain was in a deep recession similar to what is happening at present and there was also mass unemployment. The person in charge of the country at this time was Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher who was also Great Britain’s first and only female prime minister. Margaret Thatcher along with Chancellor Geoffrey Howe tried to deal with this recession by raising taxes and slashing government spending, benefits and the selling of state owned services, property etc. This mass unemployment and financial difficulties forced those who were affected to go on strike and form protests. The government’s response to those who went on strike was to cut their benefits and increase their tax.…

    I. What happened in the 1980s-1990s After the recession of America in the 1980s-1990s, America soon regained economic stability. However, some methods they took to get out of the violent recession and crises had affected the work force, most especially the men. The divide between the goods (male) and service producing (female) sectors of the economy expanded due to the global forces and technological innovation. Many companies moved from hands-on labour to mechanized work since this was cheaper, leaving American male workers unnecessary and out of jobs. Many factories closed down because of cheap labor and production costs.…

I really believe that fads are a rite of passage for childhood; last year was loom bands and I loved those things. Looking back I was always up for a bit of a fad as a child myself; I merrily French skipped my way through playtime, almost broke my wrist with my clackers and coveted my baby sisters chopper bike beyond reason. I even soaked my conkers in vinegar overnight and baked them in the oven to get that super hard one so I could beat all the boys the next day.…

In 1991, Sega was the first to introduce the Genesis game machine that used 16-bit computations for faster games and more detailed video displays. It was introduced in time for the 1991 Christmas season with several game cartridges available. Genesis also maintained compatibility with older games. With the technological lead on Nintendo, it looked as if Sega was ready to take the lead in the $6 billion dollar market for home video games. By Christmas, when Nintendo introduced its own Super NES 16-bit game, Sega held the lead in sales. Sega’s gain came partly from introducing the machine earlier and partly by selling it for $50 less than Nintendo’s machine. It also had more games available.…
