The movement sought to construct a Ram Temple on the site of Babri Masjid in Ayodhya. On 6th December 1992, the Babri Masjid was demolished by an angry crowd of Hindus. The demolition of Babri Masjid caused large scale Hindu-Muslim riots across the country. Thousands of people died as a result of these riots that erupted across India. The Bombay riots of 1993 led to the loss of hundreds of innocent lives. The Ram Janma Bhoomi Movement helped to propel BJP’s rise in the 1990s and it was able to form governments in many states of north India. The 1990s also saw the rise of militancy in Jammu and Kashmir, which was sponsored by Pakistan as a proxy war against India. The NDA government had compulsions as far as the pace of economic reforms was concerned due to limitations of a coalition government. Atal Bihari Vajpayee wanted to have friendly relations with Pakistan and signed the Lahore Declaration in February 1999 to re-establish mutual friendship and trust between the two neighbours. In April 1999, AIADMK, an alliance partner of NDA, withdrew support from the central government and Atal Bihari Vajpayee had to resign as Prime Minister of India. The President, KR Narayanan, dissolved the Lok Sabha and a midterm poll was announced which was scheduled for October
