HISTORY OF ROCK'N'ROLL
In the atmosphere of less developed band culture compared to other Asian countries, the local band May Day is consider as one of the most popular and successful band in Taiwan and mainland China. Although not worldwide famous, they do have profound influence on the youth generation of Taiwan. An authoritative magazine in Taiwan, Tianxia conducted a survey about the influence of celebrity on the generation born after 90s. Ashin, the vocalist of May Day, is listed 9th, right after Aung San Suu Kyi and before President Obama. Started as an underground band, May Day has formed for 16 years and dominated the mainstream Rock & Roll market. Ashin the vocalist, Monster the lead guitarist, Stone the rhythm guitarist, Masa the bassist and Guan You the drummer, these five men formed the current May Day. Different from other artists, this band not only controls the lyrics and composition but also takes full responsibility of arrangement and production. “Originality is crucial to every band. We want our concepts to be fully and thoroughly presented in our album” said Ashin who write all the lyrics for May Day. Though the band members all get credit for composition, Ashin is the principal writer.
The members of the band all have known each other for a long time. Ashin, Monster, Stone the rhythm guitarist, Masa and Youda Qian the first drummer went to the same high school “The Affiliated Senior High School of National Taiwan Normal University” in 1991and all joined the Guitar Club where their Rock & Roll dream began. Spending too much time playing guitars, these five young men repeated their grades except for Monster. However, because of the academic repetition, they had extra time to practice guitars together. This is when they found not only the members of their future band but also their friends for life.
Although going to the different universities, they were still bonded by their same music desire after high school
