THE SCHOOL-BASED ASSESSMENT
The CSEC history School-Based Assessment (SBA) is a research paper which accounts for 40% of your final mark. It offers an ideal opportunity for you to work on a research paper at home and get as high a mark as possible, prior to entering the examination room. The SBA allows you to develop those skills that are critical to the study of history while working on a topic in which you are interested. It gives you a chance to research a topic of your choice under the supervision of your teacher. As a student, you may not be interested in all the topics you have to study for the examination, but you may have felt that one or more topics were more interesting than the others.
The SBA is an attempt on the part of the Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) to ‘individualize a part of the curriculum to meet the needs of students’. Through the SBA you are given an opportunity to choose one area of the syllabus and do more structured, intensive research on this specific area. The following list sets out what you are required to do:
Identify an area of research appropriate to either the core or a theme in the syllabus. You are also allowed to research an aspect of local history.
Develop a rationale for selecting the particular area of research.
Identify and evaluate both primary and secondary sources.
Analyze and interpret the information obtained from the sources, in relation to the research question.
Make intelligent conclusions which are fully supported by the evidence.
Present your findings in a well-written, acceptable paper.
Syllabus requirements
According to the CSEC syllabus, each student is required to submit one research paper. Therefore, even if students work in groups or research the same topic, every student has to submit his or her individual research paper. The syllabus requirements are as follows:
The research paper must be between 1,200 and 1,500 words in length. It is important to know that
