Society. He is actually on the Germans side first, and his own countrymen are trying to kill him, not knowing he is a German. He is now on the Russian side. "My own countrymen had become my enemy." Erik is also going door to door saying he is German, but they don't believe him because he as Russian clothes on.
VII. Theme One of the themes to this book is friendship. Erik shared deep friendship with other fellows, but they would die in war. "I put my arms around him. I sobbed. Erik protects her and actually loves her, he doesn't like her for just her appearance, but her ambition to such events.
