One of the things that I had to do in the Hitler Youth was burn books. I did not even want to burn the books, but I had to if I didn’t want to blow my cover. The book burning was unnecessary. Why do you need to burn something that has nothing to do with you? They burnt those books because they didn’t say what the Nazi’s wanted them to say. The best books in the world burnt because the Nazi’s don’t want people to think differently. The whole thing angered me. I was fuming inside, but I could not let them see that.
It was my job as the Hitler Youth. I had to go to the home of a family that had been killed and burn all the “un-german” books. It reminded me of the first time that I had seen a Nazi act of aggression. This is because they burnt a bonfire in the middle of the street for everyone to see. They knocked down the door to the synagogue and burn all the books inside of it. A jewish man came outside and tried to stop them but they beat him to death. Another jewish man tried to get away but the Nazis shot him. I wanted to say something and try to stop them but I was only 8 at the time. I wanted to go over and get them to stop killing for no reason. That was probably my most powerful influence to become a spy. That was when my family realized that the Nazi’s were actully going to hunt down the Jews. Seeing the Nazis actually do something that horrible motivated me and my family to do something about it.
