To begin, Friar Lawrence’s impulsive actions of marrying Romeo and Juliet and giving Juliet the sleeping potion result in the tragic deaths of Romeo and Juliet; had he listened to his initial instincts, tragedy could have been averted. First, Friar Lawrence agrees to marry Romeo and Juliet in an impulsive decision that goes against his initial reaction to Romeo’s request. When Friar Lawrence is introduced in Act II, his opening soliloquy shows a balanced character who recognizes the “two […] opposed” or dual qualities present not only in nature, but in human nature (II.iii.28). He reflects on the fine line between virtue and vice, but lets his own vice of impulsiveness interfere with his own good instincts. For example, when Romeo reveals to Friar Lawrence that his love for Rosaline has been suddenly replaced by love for Juliet, he is shocked: “Holy Saint Francis, what a change is here!” (II.ii.69). His initial instinct is that Romeo has switched his affection too quickly. Yet, a mere twenty-three lines (of the Friar’s dialogue) later, he agrees to be Romeo’s “assistant” in marrying Juliet (II.ii.97). Cardullo asserts that the Friar agreed without “considering fully the consequences of such a secret marriage between members of feuding families” (63). Of course, the ultimate consequence is the deaths of Romeo and Juliet and this first impulsive action is the beginning of many for Friar Lawrence. The most detrimental impulsive action the Friar commits is providing Juliet with the sleeping potion even though he initially counsels her to accept this turn of events. When Juliet, in desperation, comes to Friar Lawrence’s cell for advice after she finds out about her impending marriage to Paris, he first tells her that “nothing may prorogue it” (IV.i.49). However, after “hearing her declare that she will kill herself, […] he says, ‘Hold, Daughter’” (Cardullo 61). He responds to her impulsivity by impulsively offering a “remedy” that will make it look…

Imagine that your company's sole product has recently suffered a considerable market share loss, although it is still the largest selling product of its kind. You are thinking of making a radical change in your product to restore market share to traditional levels, although such a strategy may backfire and ultimately reduce market share even further. Assume an even chance for both events, and potential gains to be equivalent to potential losses. Would you agree to such a change? Now, consider that the product has recently experienced a considerable gain in market share, and is the largest selling product of its kind. You are thinking of making a radical change in your product to further increase market share, although such a strategy may backfire and ultimately reduce market share to its former level. Assume an even chance for both events, and potential gains to be equivalent to potential losses. Would you agree to such a change? Although the choices just described are objectively indistinguishable, for many people the gamble is more attractive in the first characterization because of hovr the decision is framed. Decisions are framed either in terms of gains or losses by the reference point from which the options are assessed. A decision outcome could be framed as both a gain and a loss, depending on which reference point is selected. How choices are framed is important, because people respond differently to losses than to gains. The impact of framing effects on risky decision making, and their role in decision errors, are illustrated with reference to several notorious failed decisions. Advice is also offered on how to reduce the incidence of decision failure by minimizing framing effects. Caution should be used whenever an important decision is framed to appear as a choice between a certain loss…

The biggest limitation of traditional budgeting system is that it focuses primarily on expenses, paying little attention to the results obtained as a result of the expenses incurred. Thus in the above example, the marketing manager may fail to cash on an opportunity to sell more by increasing the travelling of his sales-persons because that will lead to the travel expenditure exceeding the budget.…

"What words come to mind when I say Gen Y?" Aaron Kesher asked the many attendees at 2011's Society for Human Resources Management conference who were packed into the room. "Entitled!" shouted one person. "Job hoppers," chimed in another. Soon, many in the room (many of them non-Gen Yers, with some Gen Y members sprinkled in) were shouting things like "smart," "résumé builders," "technically savvy," "stereotype," "comfortable with change," and "creative."…
