Day One: Day one has arrived and excited as ever. The Challenger just set sail this morning at from Portsmouth, England and the date is December 21, 1872. The weather today was beautiful to say the least; it was clear skies and a cool 50 degrees. Once we set sail I went exploring below deck and came across one of the instruments we will be using during our voyage. I asked the man what it was called and used for and he this is what he said “This device is called the Buchanan’s water sampling device. It is used to test the levels of carbonic acid in the water. You open it, place it in the ocean, and then let the water flow in. After you take the sample you have to take it to the carbonic acid analysis apparatus. The apparatus boils the water so that the gases can evaporate and be trapped and analyzed using chemical titration.’’
Day Two: Its day two which means that it is December 28, 1872. Today is my off day and good thing too because the sky is very gloomy and cold. In the morning all of us cleaned our bunks and straightened our clothes because no one likes messy rooms. I had been nominated to cook for our cabin today so as soon as I got in the kitchen I got started. I prepared my meal of salted pork, potatoes, and carrots with a lot of care. Since we were early on in our journey we had plenty of supplies available. The thought of being onboard for so long honestly scares me because I know there will be fights and sickness.
Day Three: Todays date is January 31, 1873. The weather is perfect for sailing but too bad I can’t do anything because I’ve gotten seasick. The constant motion of the boat was something I was not prepared for. I’m just thankful we have lime juice stored or else we would all get scurvy eventually which is a lack of vitamin C. I am having doubts on if I will be able to make the whole voyage. It is getting to be too much but then again that might just be because I am puking my guts out right now.
