HOLE Book ReviewThe Short Story Hole
“HOLE” Book Review
The short story “Hole” is written by Andrew Porter and is set in USA. The theme of the short story is death which is quite evident throughout from start to finish. This is evident because we see a vivid picture of the death and it helps put us in the author’s shoes.
The “Hole” story features two boys. One is the narrator who we are not given a name for and one is Tal, his friend who dies in the story. Tal is cutting the grass in his home for his brother who is paying him so he doesn’t have to do it himself. Tal’s family have a hole at the bottom of their garden that Tal’s dad made by pulling off a mine cover where they illegally dump their cut grass. They are unaware of what is down the hole and have many different myths about it. On this day Tal drops the bag full of grass down the hole and has to climb down and get it. He is brave and climbs down without thinking about it. When he is down there, the narrator calls his name but he gets no response. He keeps calling him and tells him to stop messing around. He threatens to pee on him and various other normal 10 year old jokes but still doesn’t get a response. Tal was after dying because of the dangerous fumes in the hole and two firemen made the same mistake as young Tal after.
I enjoyed reading this story as it puts us in the same frame of mind as the author through his vivid imagery and description. It helps us imagine how it feels for your best friend to be taken from you on a normal day when you were waiting for your friend to go swimming like you always do. I would recommend this story to any book reader.

If fear, quizzical characters, and death all have something in common, it is that they are all present in each of the following short stories: Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Tell Tale Heart”, Harriet Beecher Stowe’s “The Ghost in the Mill”, and Samuel Clemens’ “Cannibalism in the Cars”. Each story has a unique and thrilling plot, with diverse characters, from the maniacs in “The Tell Tale Heart” and “Cannibalism in the Cars” to the simple storyteller in “The Ghost in the Mill”. Tones differ quite a bit in each; however narration is almost the same as each short story is being narrated by someone recalling the past.…

The entire time I was reading this story I couldn’t decide how I felt. The very first paragraph draws you in when the narrator mentions the day he discovered the man in the well. It’s immediately mentioned how the man calls out for help, but then skips to how the boy and his friends thought it was important that they decided not to save him. This paragraph almost immediately forces you to do a double take. When you first start reading and hear about the man trapped in the well your mind automatically starts thinking about how you would get him out. So when the narrator mentions how they not only left him in the well but are also okay with their decision you can’t help but cringe. Why would you not help the man out of the well? This completely goes against my moral code; even reading about it makes me frustrated. But of course the main characters are children of a pretty young age, so shortly after reading about there decision to leave the man I realized that I was trying to convince myself that its okay, that they didn’t know any better. But how could they not? At any age you know about the value of life and you learn about danger.…

    The Tower Pig

The story is set behind, and outside, the walls of the Thomaston Penitentiary in present day America. The story essentially revolves around a young man who suffers the hardships of imprisonment in an American correctional facility. The protagonist is throughout the tale addressed only by his surname, Caine. Caine expresses incomprehensible anger he feels for one of the wardens, an outcast despised by colleagues and inmates alike, and who is commonly known as "The Tower Pig" by all the prisoners at the facility. "Pain, joy, worry, are shielded away until the cell doors slam and we're alone in our solitude. For ten days in the hole, I had nothing to do but hate Strazinsky, the Tower Pig, for putting me there, and to mourn my grandmother, finally to sick to visit." When we are first introduced to Caine, he has just come out of "The Hole." The Hole is presumably a slang expression for a non-corporal punishment, which implies the use of isolation for the involved offender. This sort of punishment is usually deployed as a reaction to a disciplinary offense; this is also the case with Caine. Caine put in the hole because of a verbal fight with Strazinsky. While Caine undoubtedly finds Strazinsky to be responsible for his punishment, it seems, looking back in retrospective, that he is fully aware that he himself was to blame; yet all Caine's inner turmoil and anger is channelled into his hate for Strazinsky, and the fury towards his arch-enemy continues to blaze. Imprisonment tends to have a debilitating effect on both mind and body alike. Therefore in order to counter a mental breaking, one must deploy facades, facades that…
