Imagine stumbling into a world that you never thought would have existed. Imagine visiting an island that was based off of your childhood stories, but these stories you thought to be just tales end up being real. Imagine being friends with a boy who’s invisible, a girl who can make fire with her hands, a girl who is lighter than air, and a lady who is a shape-shifter. without the help of Ransom Riggs’s great descriptions and photographs scattered throughout the novel, these characters would have dull personalities. In this novel Ransom Riggs using descriptive dialogue and pictures to build characters personalities.
All throughout the novel, Hollow City , Ransom Riggs, a very talented author, uses detailed dialogue and description to build character. He does this with all of the important characters and even some of the smaller characters. The way he builds characters varies from the way he makes the character pronounce words to the actions each character does. Jacob is definitely the main character of the book, and he has quite a bit of description about him. On page 83, there is a black and white picture of a pitbull, which is standing on what looks like mountain. This dog is standing on all fours and is standing with very tall posture. It has glasses, which are round and rustic looking, a leather collar, with spikes on it, and a pipe. This dog’s name is Addison, and he can talk. In the book, he is an a sophisticated dog, who gets scared easily . I asked a few people what they thought this dog’s personality was, and Nick said right away that it looked like an alcoholic, because of its pipe and breed. Tony said Addison looked very stuck up, which is also pretty true. FIND DIALOGUE ABOUT
