The gritty, tough environment of inner city Sydney that Cameron lives is in direct contrast to his persona. His brothers Steve, through football, and Rube, through fighting, both portray sheer toughness that has deserted Cameron. The surname of 'Wolfe' is an obvious pun as is describes the pack mentality of his family as they have to stick together, like wolves, to survive in this environment. "I'm part of the Wolfe pack, and that's enough. I know without a doubt that I'd bleed for anyone in my family. Any place. Any Time." This quote reflects Cameron's connection to his family. The title of, 'When Dog's Cry' is an extended metaphor that runs throughout the novel. There are obvious connections between Cameron and Miffy, a dog who lives a few houses up. Marcus Zusak describes the dog as "Howling so bad its almost unbearable." Parallels are made as Cameron feels hurt, like Miffy, everyday and he is hungry to fit in. There is also contrast between the dog picture that he is associated with and the wolf images reflected in his brothers. The novel is split into two narratives with the text in italics serving as the inner monologue of Cameron. The words serve as a stream of consciousness that Cameron must get out. "I wrote the words down, on a torn-up piece of paper. And to me, the world changed colour that morning." The ability for him to place his feelings on papers allows him to express his feelings in a way that speaking never could. Link back to
