This industry is mainly driven by residential real estate construction and renovation. Large chains such as Home Depot, Lowe’s, True Value, and Ace Hardware are able to expand recently because of their focus on the home improvement market, with contractor sales as a sideline (Hoover.com). This is where the family-owned stores are able to successfully compete against these large chain stores because they effectively cater to the small and mid-sized contractors who believe that price is less important than the other services that these small stores can offer. High customer concentration is the value proposition that the small, family owned stores offer opposed to these large box stores that have limited customer concentration. The large chain box stores’ value proposition is low-cost. Yes, low-cost is what consumers are looking for in most cases however, many small to mid-size contractors and even do-it-yourselfers are interested in the value proposition of differentiation. They want the knowledge that the workers can…

Most homeowners don't ask enough questions when hiring a contractor. You must check the work done by the contractor and find out their reputation in the market. Also, make sure they are insured and they have a valid license. If you are unable to get this information from the people you know, you can use the internet to get these details. Once you short-list the contractors that meet your requirement, don't hesitate to ask them questions. Always remember; when it comes to your home and money, there are no stupid…

For this reason, it is a good idea to have a repairperson put their services and costs of supplies in written contracts. For example, when I needed to have my house painted, I asked a friend for a recommendation. I requested that the handyman she suggested write me out a contract for the work. He performed the job satisfactorily. Then, I asked him to install a handrail. We talked about his service and the cost of supplies, but I did not ask for a written contract because he had done work for me before and the new job was a small one. However, when he performed the work, the rail was not steady. I repeatedly asked him to correct the problem. Finally, he fixed it and he asked me for more money because he said that he lost money on the deal, but I refused to pay him anything else. He kept trying to get more money and I told him that he was trying to take advantage of me. I had to abruptly end the conversation and move on. Now, I cannot hire him for future work. Perhaps if I had asked him to write out a contract for the handrail, the outcome would have been…
