This research assessed the struggles of homeless children. The study compared the educational struggles of a random sampling of children living in stable environments to children who are considered “homeless.” Homeless refers to any child or youth who lack a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence. The study revealed the number of homeless children is steadily increasing. However, despite the instability of a home life, a positive school environment for children and youth impacts their success as adults. It is recommended to promote community awareness regarding child…
“Across the country, about 9.6 million families spend over half of their income on housing” (Vestal). Numbers like this wouldn’t be so large if these issues were paid more attention to. These families are just trying to have a home, and a roof over their heads to keep them sheltered. They shouldn’t have to go completely broke because of this. If there were more opportunities for these families to have more affordable housing there wouldn’t be so many people struggling to make ends meet. Even with the help of the state, if the family gets it, their lives will still continue to unravel without stable housing (Vestal). That is why these families keep using most of their income to pay for their home. There was a national increase in poverty…
Homelessness has a serious impact on both the young people affected and the wider society.…
In today’s world, we experience a lot of people that are homeless. Every state has individuals that are living on the street and are lacking resources on shelters, jobs, food pantries, and etc. However, there are many stereotypes about the homeless. There are some that will argue that you chose the life you want to live, but what about the individuals with disabilities without a home because their family did not want them. What about families that previously had a job, got laid off, can not pay their bills, and certain situations brought them to living on the streets? Have you heard the stereotype that the homeless try to just get extra money and that they are not really homeless? As a Social Worker, our job would be leadership, advocating,…
Homelessness is a social problem in Australia. Youth homelessness in Australia has been on the increase due to several factors, and it is assumed that these factors may assist in the intervention and prevention of youth homelessness. The only way to decrease youth homelessness is to address the structural factors that cause it. This paper will begin by defining homelessness according to the Supported Accommodation Assistance Act 1994 and by other prominent authors of youth homelessness. Structural factors will be then discussed, including unemployment and lack of affordable housing, as prominent causes for the increase in youth homelessness. It will be argued that the Australian 'nuclear' family has changed since the 1970's and…
This youth has abandoned the only life they have ever known in hopes for in finding a more deserving one they see fit. Outcasting themselves from their life from abusive relationships, economic troubles, and a government record induces a desperate desire for them to flee. The homeless youth are compelling themselves to believe there is no other option than running away from home. This drastic decision has led some of them to take unhealthy measures to survive by depending on sex for food, shelter, and other basic human needs, while others are battling an addiction with drugs or alcohol, and in the end dependency on both of these lead most homeless youth to decrease in mental health.…
It is important to find an early exit out of homelessness because a longer stay can make it less likely for an exit out of homelessness. Many who enter into homelessness first encounter youth hostels, emergency accommodations and Out of Hours Services (OHS). In these accommodations, it is very likely for a young person to engage with other peers living in the hostel or care setting and get involved in the ‘homelessness scene’. In these accommodations, a young person is typically provided with a bed at night, but has the entire day from early in the morning until late at night to be on the streets and find things to do. This is a period that many individuals in the study talked about getting involved with other homeless individuals and partaking in drugs, alcohol, criminal activity and violence. One young man who was 19 at the time said, "Everyone that was in it (adult hostel) was on it (heroin) ... Yeah, looking at them stoned and they’re all talking about it. The relief that it’s supposed to bring them so I just tried it and liked it”(Mayock et al 2008:130). This is a common statement that so many of the homeless youth individuals experience because they don’t feel that they have many other options. They are put into ‘risky’ accommodations and meet several individuals who are participating in these risky behaviors. One young man aged…
Dale Partridge once said, 'You were born with the ability to change someone's life, don't waste it." Throughout our lives, most people choose to ignore helping those in need. Many of those people, did not choose to be in a situation where they have to ask for help. At one point, homeless people had dreams of becoming someone important in life. Despite the situations these people have gone through , helping the homeless can change our community by lowering crime rates, and having hard workers.…
In a section titled “Causes of Youth Homelessness,” it first stated that the “same factors that contribute to adult homelessness such as poverty, lack of affordable housing, low education levels, unemployment, mental health, and substance abuse issues, can also play a role in the occurrence and duration of a youth's homelessness.” These were good points that brought up questions in regards to parent-youth relationships and some of the long-term effects, which I decided to come back to later. Furthermore, it said that beyond these factors, “the phenomenon of youth homelessness is largely a reflection of family dysfunction and breakdown, specifically familial conflict, abuse, and disruption,” which I agreed with. Though the article did not specify further, some types of conflicts that came to mind were disputes over risky behavior such as promiscuity, opposing views on discipline, and sexual orientation. When it comes to domestic abuse there are many layers including physical, emotional, sexual, and mental that, along with the conflicts, leads to the deterioration of families. The brief continued to say that youth usually enter a state of homelessness as a result of running away from home- which the desire and reaction of escaping from these predicaments is understandable- or from being abandoned by their guardians. Additionally, it stated that family conflict is “more critical for youth than adults since they are, by virtue of their developmental stage in life, still largely financially, emotionally, and, depending on their age, legally dependent upon their…
Many children are forced into homelessness due to poverty or household instability. For homeless children, the loss of their homes is often more sudden, more unexpected, and more traumatic. The family is suddenly thrust outside of its own community, friends, support system, and schools. They begin to focus on their survival instead of their education and becomes the last thing on their mind. What many people don’t understand is homelessness affects a child's ability to succeed in school, their legal rights regarding education, and what schools can do to mitigate the potentially harmful effects of homelessness on children (Rafferty).…
Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, the number of young people who were forced out of their homes, abandoned, or living on the street with their parents’ consent was increasing. In the 1990s, the main reason for youth homelessness was dysfunction within the family. It has become increasingly difficult for these youth to successfully integrate into a modern, industrialized society. As a result, most children and adolescents who are forced to leave their homes or choose to run away today end up living with others, staying in shelters, with friends, or sleeping inside whatever space they can find in order to protect themselves. Teenage homelessness is a serious, growing problem in America. Thousands and thousands of people find themselves living on the streets every…
According to the National Resource Center on Domestic Violence, "homeless youth are typically defined as unaccompanied youth between the ages of 12 and 24 who are without family support and who are living in shelters, on the streets, in cars or vacant buildings or who are "couch surfing" or living in other unstable circumstances." On any given night in the US, there is about half a million homeless individuals. 40 percent of that are homeless youth. It is important to say that exact numbers of homeless youth are hard to determine because the lack of standard methods and the mobility of the homeless population. The amount of homeless youth is staggering and heartbreaking. There are many factors that lead to homelessness, and many consequences…
Crisis happens to everyone and depending on the severity; it has the potential to render individuals and families without the resources to overcome adversities, which can result in homelessness at any given time. The homeless population lives at the edge of poverty often losing connections with family, neighborhoods, and friends. They face a stigma inflicted by society, which often leads to them being isolated and/or rejected. This paper will examine the meaning of homelessness, multiple perspectives on the issue, what is currently being initiated in the field of social work, and explore ideas on possible solutions.…
