Good morning Mr. X, my name is Melissa and I am here to better explain your condition to you in more lemans terms to aid you to a healthier style of living. Hypertension is a blood pressure that is above the recommended 120/80 (systolic/diastolic) range. The systolic pressure is the pressure of the blood as it flows out during contraction while the diastolic pressure is the pressure of the blood within the artery as it flows into the heart during the rest period. Blood volume, the amount of blood pumped by the heart or cardiac output, and also the contraction of smooth muscle inside of the blood vessels or arterial tone are three contributing factors of blood pressure. In your case age plays a key factor, the reasoning behind that is as we age the continuous wear on the aorta and its branches causes stiffening of the arteries over time directly causing the gradual increase. The stiffening of the arteries makes the heart have to work harder causing the elevated blood pressure. Controlled blood pressure drastically reduces risk factors such as stroke, heart attack, heart failure, kidney disease, and even premature death. To help lower the risk factors you can begin by restricting sodium and alcohol intake while also including regular exercise and eating a well-balanced diet.

To begin with diabetes is a chronic hormonal disorder in which proper blood sugar levels are not maintained; due either to insufficient production of insulin by the pancreas or to an inability of the body’s cells to use insulin efficiently (site).     Typically there are a few tests a doctor can perform to diagnose you. The first is called an A1C test, this tests the blood glucose from the last 2 to 3 months, this test is preferred because no fasting is necessary. Anything that comes back less than 5.7% A1C is normal, anything between 5.7% and 6.4% A1C is considered pre diabetes and anything that is greater than 6.5% A1C is diabetes. The second test is the Fasting Plasma Glucose, or FPG, this test is done after fasting (normally eight hours of no eating or drinking, besides water). If the results come back with anything less than 100 mg/dl it is considered normal, if it is between 100 mg/dl and 125 mg/dl they say the patient is pre diabetic and anything that is higher than 126 ml/dl is full blown diabetes. Also used is the Oral Glucose Tolerance Test or the OGTT, this test checks the blood glucose levels before as well as two hours after drinking a special sugary drink that determines how your body processes sugar. With this test, 140 mg/dl or less is normal, 140 mg/dl to 199 mg/dl is pre diabetes and 200 mg/dl or higher is diabetes. Last is the Random Plasma Glucose Test where the blood is checked and anything higher than 200 mg/dl is considered diabetic (Diagnosing Diabetes, 2014).
