Homer and Sappho
HUM 300 - Classical Humanities
March 1, 2013 Sappho’s poem, entitled Fragment 16, is of the lyrical style instead of the epic style we are used to in Homer’s Iliad. The lyrical style of poetry got its name because it was usually accompanied by a lyre while it was recited. It also was used to express more emotion rather than telling a story. This form of poetry seems to be more artistic rather than the story telling of epic poetry of the time. In this poem we are able to use the comparison of different imagery to understand a common theme within the poem itself. The reason for the interesting title of the poem is because most of Sappho’s poetry is now only found in fragmented forms. Most of Sappho’s writing is from 600 B.C.E. As stated, Fragment 16 uses a comparative imagery. This allows the reader to easily understand what is being discussed and is able to relate to it. Sappho really evokes an understanding of love and beauty in this poem. She opens the idea that you find beauty in things because you love them. It’s almost as if she’s trying to get the reader to really think about what they love. Or what they find beautiful in this world. She gives her own example when she compares the imagery of the armies and the idea of Helen’s beauty and then compares that to Anactoria, who is her own personal icon of beauty. It’s like she’s trying to get her reader to really think about what inspires them. Culturally a lot of readers of the time would probably find inspiration in the imagery of the army, as that is what they held in valuable ideals at the time. This allows to tie the poem to the time period in which Sappho lived and of course found inspirations for her own writing. For example, this poem gives you a moment to think about the army; the cavalry, the foot soldiers, and even the fleet. To think of these items as beautiful, idealistic. This, of course, is a very constant theme in a lot of art work from the Greek culture. Let’s take a look at the carving on

Like an artist's pallet of paint, authors color their words with vibrancy through the use of these literary tools.     In the translation of the remaining fragments of Sappho, the readers of the text can only view Sappho through a narrow lens. Anne Carson’s translation of Sappho’s poetry creates a perspective through which the readers are at the mercy of her editorial choices. Because most of Sappho’s poetry has been lost, translating it into English in a comprehensible way is very difficult. Carson states that, “on a papyrus roll the text is written in columns, without word division, punctuation or lineation. To read such a text is hard even when it comes to us in its entirety and most papyri don’t” (Carson ix). Carson’s insertion of word division, punctuation and lineation into the English translation of Sappho’s poetry as a result, may, and probably did, change the meaning, underlying message, or understanding of her thoughts. Carson has “sometimes manipulated it’s spacing on the page, to restore a hint of musicality or suggest syntactic motion” (Carson xi). The question now is: did Sappho’s remaining poetry need the assistance of Carson to retain its musicality? Or is Carson’s manipulation of the text masking other intent?…

    In “Very Well, Charaxus,” Sappho explains the dangers of becoming egocentric: “If you must flutter around the steps of the great and/Not of the noble and true, and say good-bye to/Al your friends and get so swollen-headed/You hurt me and say I am.” To leave what is noble and true seems to be entering to an egocentric society. It seems that by mentioning “… flutter[ing] around the steps of the great…” is meaning that the object of the poem has forgot what is important. It does not seem that “the great” in this case would be those individuals of stature, as nobility would infer some sort of high status, but “the great” meaning the great in ego. Perhaps this person, who she is obviously very angry at, has caused her pain simply by his/her leaving, but, it seems that there is a more psychological aspect involved. It seems that Sappho is dealing with personal anguish with the subject of the poem. This leads rather well into “Poem I.”…

    An allusion is a kind of poetic device where the poet mentions or refers to something outside of the text. The allusions usually have something to do with the bible or mythical people and events. In the poem, there is one really important allusion. The allusion is located in the third stanza when the poet writes, “The broken wall, the burning roof and the tower / And Agamemnon dead” (Yeats II. 10-11).
