Homer Home Sweet Home
The name of the artwork that I have chosen to analyze is Home, Sweet Home by Winslow Homer. Homer first came to national attention during the Civil War with his accurate, vivid sketches of life at the front. As an artist-reporter he accompanied the Army of the Potomac in the Peninsula campaign in Virginia, observing camp life and some combat. While Homer drew a few traditional military scenes, such as bayonet and cavalry charges, he mostly depicted the utterly unheroic day-to-day activities of ordinary soldiers behind the lines.

Homer's Civil War drawings and paintings showed not only accurate down-to-earth details of soldiers' everyday lives but touched on themes of isolation, morality and nature's adversity, which he dealt with in his later art. To this day, these wartime images remain powerful reminders of this nation's most tragic conflict.

When I took a closer look and upon further research I found out that, one of the dark figures turns out to be a brass band playing the popular “Home Sweet Home” tune of the title? In contrast, the foreground is divided off by the light brown of a hanging cloth which merges into the darker browns of the tents and earth the whole scene seeming to concentrate on two soldiers in blue uniforms. As others have observed and stated it is to be perceived listening to the music. Their thoughts Im sure are of distant homes. But Homer subtly subverts that idea. They gaze down on what has now become their home with their army gear outside a small low tent with a single boot sticking out from the dark interior. I like to appreciate the little details that Homer throws in that make it all that much more realistic like the metal pot steaming away on glowing embers, or the two hard biscuits that lie on a metal

Homer did not receive formal art training. He began his art career as an apprentice for a commercial lithographer. In the late 1850's he began doing work for Harper's Weekly. His early work for Harper's was primarily to create line art drawings from photographs. At the time pictures were printed by "stamping" them from a large wood block.…

Here we see a dark, asymmetrical piece that seems to be referencing the First or Second World War. The painting has been composed on a horizontally orientated canvas and moves left to right. Beginning with an assumed deceased, young, blindfolded man in uniform, a woman carries the man on a stretcher, toward the horde of women. The women are either holding photos of the young man and pointing toward the sky or holding open wounds on their bodies in an attempt to literally hold…

During the first half of the 20th century, humanity experienced two consecutive world wars that were among the deadliest in history. This was a new type of warfare that the world had never seen before. It had Napoleonic-style battles but, instead of muskets and swords, they used machine guns and tanks; which produced countless more casualties. This horrible period of tension and war left over seventy seven million people dead and countless wounded or lost. However, the few soldiers that survived were sometimes able to channel their postwar trauma into great works of art that show us the pure truth about war. Two good examples…

“Facing it” by Yusef Komunyakaa and “Dulce et Decorum Est” by Wilfred Owen, are two powerful poems with the graphical life like images on the reality of war. It is apparent that the authors was a soldier who experienced some of the most gruesome images of World War I. In “Ducle et Decorum Est” Owen tells us about a personal experience in which he survived a chemical warfare attack. Although he survives, some of his fellow troops do not. As in “Facing It” Komunyakaa is also a soldier who has survived a war. Komunyakaa response to his war experience is deeply shaped by his visit to Lin’s memorial. Inspired by the monument, Komunyakaa confronts his conflicted feelings about Vietnam, its legacy, and even more broadly, the part race plays in America. Both author used imagery and symbolism as they wrote these poems. Owens describes the soldiers as being crippled, mentally and physically overcome by the weight of their experiences in the war. He compares the young men to “old beggars under sacks”, saying that war turns young men with a full life ahead of them, and optimistic views into beggars that have given up on life and believe that life is never going to get any better (lines 1 and 2). The imagery that he uses allows us to see how gruesome the war really was, and how it was not just something that was glorious and honorable. In the second stanza Owens continues to use similes to show imagery, while ecstasy usually means, an excessive amount of happiness, here it is used to describe how young me are shocked into trying to run for their lives from “Gas! (line1). As where Komunyakaa describes himself as a black person that hides in the darkness of that granite (line 1 and 2). Komuyakaa stands at the memorial realizing that is more that it appears; it is not just cold stone, but something he identifies with on a more deep and profound level. It is this deeper meaning that inspires his emotional response in lines 3-5. These Loading...Manning Page 3 lines show both his…

While visiting the Jaycee Park Centre for the Arts, this picture of cowboys rounding up cows on a ranch instantly caught my eye. The picture is a standard size of 3x3, and is square shaped. It is enclosed within a golden frame, which makes it more conspicuous. I was drawn to the picture by the cowboy who is wearing the red scarf, and sky blue shirt. The artist James Spurlock, has used him to capture the observer’s attention by using bold colors on his clothes as opposed to the other two cowboys, and the cows. The artist has also created an impression of distance as the cows in the front appear to be large in size. and clearer as compared to the two cowboys in the background. The element of a middle ground is present which is portrayed by the cowboy with the red scarf. He appears to be positioned between the cows in the front, and the other two cowboys in the back. The artist has been able to imply the texture of the cows’ skin using different brush strokes. One can see the roughness of the cows’ skin even without having to touch the smooth oil painted canvas. One cannot immediately tell the time of day when the picture was taken. This is because the background is not blue, but rather it is a greyish color, and most probably the cowboys are trying to lead the cows back to their stables for shelter before it rain. In the process of rounding up the cows, the surrounding is filled with dust resulting in the dark gold background.…

Dead tree trunks rise from the muddy ground and clouds of smoke obscure the view of the background. The searchlights piercing through the murky clouds give off a sense of lostness, but may also signify that among the barren wasteland, there is still a sign of humanity and hope. This painting exceptionally illustrates how the war changed beautiful, innocent meadows and fields into grotesque and frightening wastelands.…

The soldiers that are shown in the photograph range from the ages of seventeen to nineteen. They were young men with bright futures ahead of them who gave it all up to fight for a country that they loved. This one photograph brings forth so many emotions that it is hard to just describe one. I cannot help but be overcome with sadness trying to imagine what these men had seen or done during the war. They most likely saw men, maybe even some from their platoon, die in the chaos of battle. Men who stood by…

The interview that Michael Meyers has with Billy Collins about the writing of this poem gives a person insight to what the author was thinking about as he wrote this poem. Mr. Meyer asks Mr. Collins about the images in the poem, he feels that they are of a photojournalistic quality, and he asks Mr. Collins “isn’t a picture better than a thousand words?” The response that is given is that he wanted to” avoid moralistic antiwar rhetoric”, so he stuck with the visual aspects of a war zone. (Collins, 2005, p. 942)…

In United States’ history, there has never been a battle as influential and graphic as the Civil War (1861-1865). It was a revolution in several aspects, especially in media, becoming responsible for the first great surge of artistic representations during events of its time. Several of these depictions included certain aspects of the war such as the literal battlefield, fugitives and death--all of which is portrayed in The Gallant Charge of the 54th Massachusetts (Colored) Regiment. And while some works, like the lithograph, functioned as commemoration for the war, others were meant to disillusion the home front of its supposed glory through the display of the dark reality that…
