High school teacher, Christine Pelton, did the right thing, all those students deserved the score they received, why should they get rewarded for work that isn’t theirs, when the other students put all their own work into the project? Both the principle and the super intendent agreed with Pelton’s decision, and failed the 28 sophomores. But, after parents of the students who received a zero, complained to the school board, they ordered Pelton to go easier on the guilty students. Their parents are supposed to teach them how to make good decisions, and if they don’t then they need to be prepared for the punishments that they will …show more content…
face. How do these parents expect their children to learn from their mistakes, if they don’t have a punishment? Your parents won’t always be right by your side getting you out of everything you get yourself into.
There are teachers all over the nation that do not have the courage to stand up to the superiors, such as officials in the district office. However, there are still individuals like Pelton who have maintained their personal integrity during trying times. The cheating incident that occurred in a Kansas high school was a primary example of the unity we lack in the school system. Although backing up Mrs. Pelton would have been the right thing to do, the Kansas school district’s support for her crumbled under the immense pressure brought upon them by the student’s parents. By not supporting Christine Pelton’s actions, the school district exemplified a true lack of moral in our country.
Since Pelton is a teacher at the high school in Piper, Kansas, why would the school not defend her actions? After all, the students are the ones that caused this incident. When one makes a choice that they know can come with a serious consequence, that individual is solely to blame for whatever punishment they might face. In the case of Christine Pelton, a teacher with outstanding character and moral was faced to stand up for herself by resigning, after a poor decision by her respective school district. This event should serve as a warning to the American public; our morals have taken a turn for the worst in the last couple of decades and something needs to be done about it before, “doing the right thing” becomes doing the wrong
thing.
Pelton had every right resign. She, unlike the rest of the School Board, stood with what she believed was right. When the School Board was losing integrity, Pelton was gaining it. She felt strongly about the situation and wanted the students to realize that there will be consequences for poor actions. Pelton stood by her strong beliefs of hard work and morality, and maintained integrity during difficult times.
