Homosexuality In John Donovan

John Donovan has done a great job paving a road for teen literature featuring homosexuality in the novel I’ll get there. It better be worth the trip. This book was written in 1969, and was one of the first to highlight homosexuality. In this novel, a boy named David “Davy” Ross is forced to move to New York with his alcoholic mother and his beloved dog after his grandmother’s sudden death. Because of switching schools in the middle of the year, Davy struggled to adjust to his new life style. Davy soon becomes friends with one of his classmates. When their friendship takes an unexpected turn, neither of the boys know what to do. All in all, this was a decent novel, but I personally just didn’t particularly like the way it was written. I also
didn’t like how any of the characters really had an in depth description. Really we had no way of knowing what either Davy or Altschuler really looked like, which was petty frustrating. However the plot of the story is overall very good. It makes us look at how views on homosexuallity has changed over time. If you’re looking for a quick read, and a book that talks about the struggles people in the LGBT+ community face, this book may be for you.
